Netflix India continues to expand its 2027 slate and has lined up a new romantic comedy series, titled Janta Inter College. Anand Tiwari, best known for the romantic musical Prime Video series Bandish Bandits, directs the show, marking his return to Netflix eight years after helming Netflix’s first Original Indian movie, Love Per Square Foot (2018).

Janta Inter College is billed as a young-adult romantic comedy-drama series set in a school in Bihar and features an ensemble cast led by Vishal Jethwa (Mardaani 2, Homebound) and Palak Tiwari (Kisi Ka Bhai Kisi Ki Jaan). Jethwa makes his web series debut with this show, while it’s the second streaming series for Tiwari following Prime Video’s Lukkhe. The principal cast also includes Sanjay Mishra, Shilpa Shukla, Sharman Joshi, Saurabh Shukla, and Vishwanath Chatterjee, alongside Dia Mirza in a powerful cameo role. The show finished shooting in September and is currently in post-production, targeting a premiere in early 2027.

Plot details of the series are being kept under wraps, but What’s on Netflix can exclusively reveal that it’s inspired by a story by Divya Prakash Dubey, the writer behind Netflix India’s recent success, Musafir Cafe. Dubey has written the show with Anup Pandey, Garima Pura, and Harish Peddinti. The series follows life on a college campus and is pitched as a coming-of-age romantic comedy built around courtship, humour, and the crises of a student life.

Dubey is reuniting with the streaming giant on a new show even as the second season of Musafir Cafe moves into development. Based on Dubey’s beloved novel of the same name, the Vikrant Massey, Vedika Pinto, and Mahima Makwana-starrer struck a deeply personal chord with the audience and became an instant hit due to its intimate storytelling, soulful music, and emotionally resonant relationships that viewers continued to discuss even after the last episode. Writing on the next chapter of Musafir Cafe hasn’t officially commenced yet, but it’s expected to revisit the emotional and musical elements that defined its first season while exploring the next chapter of its story.

Janta Inter College marks a special reunion project for Anand Tiwari. His debut feature directorial Love Per Square Foot starring Vicky Kaushal and Angira Dhar was initially set for theatrical release but was ultimately released directly on Netflix, becoming the first mainstream production from India to stream on the service after entering the market. Tiwari then went on to direct several projects for Prime Video, including Feels Like Ishq and Maja Ma before making his career’s biggest mark with two seasons of Bandish Bandits. The musical romance, which explored the debate of music being a discipline versus a means of liberation, established his credentials as a filmmaker capable of blending music, romance and character-driven storytelling.

With Janta Inter College, Tiwari is back at Netflix and plans to expand his association for a longer-term collaboration involving multiple projects. In addition to directing, Tiwari has also produced the show under his and Amritpal Singh Bindra’s Leo Media Collective banner.
