Netflix UK has just announced a slew of new series pickups, and among them is a new series commission: Marbles. Robert Popper, the brilliant comedic mind behind Channel 4’s beloved Friday Night Dinner, is bringing his signature brand of family dysfunction to Netflix with a brand-new multi-generational comedy series titled Marbles.

What is the plot of Marbles?
If you’ve ever felt like you’re being squeezed from both ends of life, this series is for you. Marbles will explore the glorious, exhausting mess of the “sandwich generation”—those who are simultaneously raising young children while caring for their aging parents. The story centers on a middle-aged couple, Sam and Samantha, as they attempt to cope with the sheer craziness of life in the middle.
Here is the official synopsis provided by Netflix:
“How do you stop your kids from hiding your keys in a bowl of milk, or sleeping in a cardboard box, while convincing your seventy-five-year-old father to move out of your bloody house? For Sam and Samantha, this is their life. It’s a glorious mess. And it’s about to get messier… A brilliantly observed, laugh-out-loud comedy about being squeezed from both ends of life – and slowly losing your marbles in the middle.”
Who is starring in Marbles?
Netflix has assembled absolute British comedy royalty to lead the 6-part series.
While the exact character breakdowns haven’t been officially mapped to the actors just yet, the ensemble is incredibly strong:
- Robert Webb (Peep Show, That Mitchell and Webb Look)
- Timothy Spall (The Sixth Commandment, Mr. Turner, Harry Potter) – Given the synopsis, it’s highly likely the legendary Spall will be playing the notoriously stubborn 75-year-old father!
- Alexandra Roach (Utopia, Black Mirror, No Offence)
- Denise Welch (Tip Toe, Coronation Street, Waterloo Road)
- Louise Brealey (Such Brave Girls, Sherlock)
Who is behind the series?
Marbles is created and written by Robert Popper, who is best known for creating the iconic Channel 4 sitcom Friday Night Dinner and co-creating Look Around You. Big Talk Studios (the powerhouse production company behind Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, and The Outlaws) produces the series alongside Popper Pictures.
Executive producers on the project include Kenton Allen (Rev, The Outlaws), Caroline Leddy (Derry Girls, The Inbetweeners), and Robert Popper himself.
What is the production status and release date for Marbles?
We won’t have to wait long for cameras to start rolling. Netflix confirmed at the Edinburgh TV Festival that filming for Marbles is scheduled to start in Autumn 2026, although our intel indicates it’s going to start in September. It’s shooting in London, we’re told.
As for a release date, Netflix has officially slated the series for a 2027 premiere. Given the autumn production start, a mid-to-late 2027 release window seems like the most logical bet for this 6-episode comedy.
