Netflix’s push into weekly Japanese television continues to soar. Next up on the platform’s expanding slate of licensed J-Dramas is the quirky workplace series Gate 24: The Border, which is set to begin streaming globally on Sunday, August 2nd, 2026.
This upcoming release continues what has been a massive summer for J-Drama fans on Netflix. Joining the likes of July releases 25 Years of You and The Vacation Principle, Gate 24: The Border (known domestically as Daikuukou GATE24) promises to bring an engaging, suspenseful, and frequently humorous look at the frontline workers protecting Japan’s airports.
Here is everything you need to know about the new drama coming to Netflix.
What is Gate 24: The Border about?
The 10-episode drama tackles the fast-paced and high-stakes world of airport customs. With international crimes like smuggling, forged passports, and human trafficking becoming increasingly sophisticated, airport immigration and customs stand as the nation’s final line of defense.
To handle the unprecedented surge in foreign visitors and eliminate traditional bureaucratic barriers, a special unit reporting directly to the Cabinet Secretariat is established: GATE24 (Global Airport Task Enforcement). However, the reality of the unit falls far short of its grand vision. Treated as an unwanted burden by other departments, GATE24 is assigned to a tiny inspection booth far from the main gates, handling mostly charter and small aircraft flights.
The story centers on Mori Machi, a quirky new customs officer assigned to this ragtag unit. While Machi is absolutely brilliant at reading objects and deducing the truth from luggage, she is hopelessly awkward when it comes to dealing with actual people. As the underdog unit clashes over rules, regulations, and human concerns, they must learn to work together to overcome institutional barriers and become the ultimate professionals standing on Japan’s border.
Who is in the cast?

The series is headlined by award-winning actress Shuri (Monster, Love At Least), who takes on the lead role of the incredibly observant but socially inept customs officer, Mori Machi.
She is joined by a massive ensemble cast of familiar and rising Japanese stars (full character list here), including:
- Gordon Maeda (Tokyo Revengers)
- Rihito Itagaki (Alice in Borderland)
- Kyoko Saito (former Hinatazaka46 member, Muddy Waters)
- Toshiro Yanagiba
- Yasuko Matsuyuki
- Kaoru Okunuki
- Sayaka Akimoto
- Seiichi Tanabe
- Mitsuru Fukikoshi
Behind the camera, the drama is directed by Jôta Tsunehiro (Women Document Detectives), with the screenplay penned by Kentarô Ushio. Viewers can also look forward to a catchy opening, as Japanese band RIKON has been confirmed to perform the show’s theme song.
When do new episodes drop on Netflix?
Gate 24: The Border will premiere domestically in Japan on TV Asahi on Thursday, July 23rd, 2026, occupying the network’s prime 9:00 PM Thursday drama slot.
Netflix has secured the international streaming rights and will begin dropping episodes globally a little over a week later, starting Sunday, August 2nd, 2026. New episodes of the 10-part series will continue to arrive weekly on Sundays.
