What is the plot of Human Vapor?

Netflix confirmed the reboot of The Human Vapor features a fresh, entirely original storyline and cutting-edge visual effects, which were provided by Shirogumi—the Academy Award-winning VFX team that amazed the world with Godzilla Minus One.

In this grounded reimagining, the world recoils in shock when environmental energy expert Professor Sano (played by Morley Robertson) suddenly swells and violently explodes during a live television interview. The culprit behind this unprecedented murder is the “Human Vapor”—a mysterious young man who can transform his body into gas and slip through any barrier. He announces his killings in advance and carries them out, seemingly mocking the authorities as they struggle to close in on him.

As each new bizarre killing escalates a fervor of formless, pervasive fear and curiosity across Japan, a suspended detective and a relentless reporter race to stop the unstoppable force and uncover the dark truth behind a secret project that used and discarded the vulnerable [1, 3, 9].
For those interested in the synopsis of the original 1960 film, The Human Vapor, we’ve sourced it from IMDb Pro:

“A librarian is subject to a scientific experiment which goes wrong and transforms him into ‘The Human Vapour’. He uses his new ability to rob banks to fund the career of his girlfriend, a beautiful dancer. The Human Vapour is ruthless in his quest for money and kills anyone who stands in his way, especially police. He soon becomes Tokyo’s most wanted criminal. Can he be stopped before he kills again?”
