Kate and Hal Wyler are officially heading back to our screens. The Diplomat will return for a highly anticipated fourth season on Netflix, and with production now fully wrapped, we’re tracking everything you need to know about the next chapter of the hit political thriller.
The stakes for season 4 are, let’s say, quite high. Fortunately, Netflix didn’t make us sweat it out waiting to know if it’d come back; they gave the series a very quick renewal, option to renew the series for Season 4 back in May 2025—months before the third season even dropped.
With the series currently riding high on a fresh wave of Emmy nominations, here is your comprehensive updated guide to everything we know so far about The Diplomat Season 4, from massive casting shakeups and new filming locations to our best release date prediction.
The Diplomat Scores 6 Emmy Nominations
Before we look ahead to Season 4, we have to celebrate The Diplomat’s massive showing at the upcoming 78th Annual Primetime Emmy Awards! For its explosive third season, the political thriller raked in an impressive six nominations, firmly cementing its status as one of Netflix’s best prestige dramas:
- Outstanding Drama Series
- Lead Actress in a Drama Series (Keri Russell)
- Lead Actor in a Drama Series (Rufus Sewell)
- Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series (Bradley Whitford)
- Outstanding Writing for a Drama Series (“Amagansett” by Peter Ackerman and Debora Cahn)
- Outstanding Casting for a Drama Series
The show also continues to have decent viewership on Netflix in addition to its ability to keep picking up nominations. Season 3 notably spent 3 weeks in the global top 10s, and the series has now picked up, according to Netflix’s Engagement Reports, 783.8M viewing hours globally between 2023 and mid-2026, equating to 126.4M views.
Who is returning for Season 4?
A huge shakeup has hit the call sheet! Now that we are deep into the Grace Penn administration, Netflix has officially promoted three stars to series regulars:
- Allison Janney as President Grace Penn
- Bradley Whitford as First Husband Todd Penn
- Nana Mensah as White House Chief of Staff Billie Appiah
As Deadline recently reported, Mensah’s Billie Appiah has been with the show since Season 1 but becomes much more central moving forward. After secretly back-channeling to oust Grace Penn as VP in Season 3, Billie now has to figure out how to ingratiate herself with the newly minted POTUS.
Meanwhile, Janney and Whitford’s promotions serve as their continued television reunion. Both actors famously worked with The Diplomat series creator Debora Cahn on NBC’s Emmy-laden political drama The West Wing.
Showrunner Debora Cahn told Netflix’s Tudum, “Working with Allison and Brad, watching them together again, and the off-the-charts foursome that is them with Keri and Rufus … It’s an insane bag of candy. Our expectations were high, and it blew right past them.”
They’ll be joining the returning core cast:

We also expect (but it’s not confirmed) to see more of Aidan Turner as Callum Ellis, the spy who served as Kate’s brief romantic lifeline in Season 3. Keep in mind, Margaret Roylin (Celia Imrie) and President Rayburn (Michael McKean) are permanently off the board following their shocking deaths.
Where did The Diplomat Season 4 film?
Cameras officially rolled on the fourth season from November 3, 2025, to June 5, 2026.
The production globetrotted once again. While the series returned to its staple locations in London, England (we caught a first glimpse back in April), and New York, USA, Season 4 also brought the political drama to Italy!

We’ve also obtained another behind-the-scenes glimpse of the new season, featuring Keri Russell and Bradley Whitford shooting a major sequence on London’s famous Jermyn Street. The photos capture Kate Wyler and First Gentleman Todd Penn stepping out of a vehicle flanked by close protection officers as they head into Turnbull & Asser, the historic, Royal Warrant-holding bespoke shirtmaker known for outfitting King Charles III. The production clearly went all out for the high-profile scene, bringing in over a hundred extras to play barricaded fans, police officers, and a swarm of paparazzi, hinting at a highly publicized—and heavily guarded—public outing for the pair.

As reported by Florence Daily News, the production filmed scenes in Tuscany between May and June 2026. The historic center of Lucca was transformed into an open-air film set, with cameras rolling in iconic locations like Piazza Napoleone, Porta San Pietro, and Piazza San Frediano, before additional production moved into Florence.
What are the episode titles for Season 4?
We can confirm the titles for the upcoming eight-episode season. In alphabetical order, the Season 4 episode titles are:

- Phony Negroni
- Redcoats
- Special Envoy
- The Dead

- Warships
- Windsor
We also now have the official episode-by-episode writing credits, showcasing the powerhouse creative team bringing this season’s complex geopolitical story to life. Creator and showrunner Debora Cahn returns to write the teleplay for the season premiere (from a story co-written by co-producer Anna Adele Hagen), as well as solely writing episodes 2 and 8. The rest of the season’s scripts are divided among the show’s returning senior staff: co-executive producer Jessica Brickman penned Episode 3, executive producer Peter R. Noah wrote Episode 4, executive producer Eli G. Attie took on Episode 5, executive story editor Julianna Dudley Meagher wrote Episode 6, and Anna Adele Hagen handled Episode 7.
What to expect from Season 4 of The Diplomat
Season 3 was defined as “the split” by creator Debora Cahn, marking the emotional downfall of Kate and Hal’s marriage. But while Kate and Hal seemingly ended the season by reconciling—with Kate begging for a second chance and abandoning her romance with Callum—a geopolitical bombshell instantly derailed their happy ending.
The biggest thread Season 4 needs to tackle is the Poseidon Missile. As we learned in the explosive Season 3 finale, the US and the UK were supposed to contain a distressed Russian B-90 Sarov nuclear submarine using a concrete “Runit Dome” scenario. Instead, Hal and President Grace Penn covertly orchestrated the theft of the sub’s “doomsday weapon.”
When Kate pieces together that they didn’t just photograph the sub with a drone, but actually deployed a massive Ohio-level sub to steal the Poseidon, Hal chillingly tells her to “tell no one.”
This leaves Kate in an impossible position. She is watching her husband and the President of the United States go completely rogue. Creator Debora Cahn teased the terrifying new dynamic, telling Netflix:
“[Fans] should be worried. There’s plenty to worry about. It can be pretty chilling when you see who takes power and get the sense that they may be horrifically misusing it.”
Worse still for Kate, the betrayal isn’t romantic—it’s intellectual. First Husband Todd Penn pointed out Hal and Grace’s “extremely productive working relationship,” and Cahn confirmed that watching her husband change the world with another woman is a massive blow to Kate. “It’s a much, much, much bigger betrayal,” the writer said. “When two people are pushing the gas at the same time and nobody’s got their foot on the brake — it’s scary.”
If Prime Minister Trowbridge or the Russians find out America stole the Poseidon weapon, it could trigger World War III. Keri Russell promises that the impending “unraveling will be fun,” while Sewell teases that whether Kate and Hal are warring or together, fans are in for a wild ride.

When will The Diplomat Season 4 be on Netflix?
As of our last update in July 2026, Netflix has officially slated Season 4 to premiere sometime in late 2026.
Since filming wrapped on June 5, 2026, the series is currently deep into post-production. Given the standard turnaround times for a Netflix drama of this scale, we are heavily predicting a Q4 2026 release date—likely arriving just in time for November or December binge-watching.
