What to Watch on Netflix This Weekend
Given the numbers, the chances are you’re already watching the second half of Bridgerton, so you’ll have to forgive us for skipping it over for our what-to-watch picks this week!
Ultraman: Rising (2024)
Rating: PG
Language: English
Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
Director: Shannon Tindle, John Aoshima
Cast: Christopher Sean, Gedde Watanabe, Tamlyn Tomita, Keone Young, Julia Harriman
Anyone who’s read my stuff before will know how much of a fan of Lost Ollie I am (it featured in my Hidden Gems of 2022 list!), so I’m thrilled to report the near-universal love coming in for Ultraman: Rising, the new project from Shannon Tindle based on the long-running Japanese franchise.
In our four-star review published this morning, Andrew Morgan concluded:
“Ultraman: Rising is a surprising animated hit for Netflix, Tsuburaya, and its talented creators. A family film that tugs at the heartstrings while serving its intended audience with beautiful optics and impactful fight theatrics. One of the strongest Netflix films of the year, animated or otherwise.”
Tell Them You Love Me (2023)
Rating: TV-14
Language: English
Genre: Documentary
Director: Nick August-Perna
Cast: Kate Dulcich, Jerron Herman, Brenda McCullough
Runtime: 102 min / 1h 42m
As we first reported, the Mindhouse Productions documentary Tell Them You Love Me is making its streaming debut in the United States today. It tells a remarkable story directed by Nick August-Perna.
Here’s what you can expect:
“This documentary explores the controversial relationship between a professor and a nonverbal man that leads to a trial over race, disability and power.”
Welcome to Marwen (2018)
Director: Robert Zemeckis
Cast: Steve Carell, Leslie Mann, Diane Kruger, Merritt Wever, Janelle Monáe, Eiza González
Note: This release doesn’t drop until Sunday.
Finally, while Netflix no longer has The Office, and if Space Force either doesn’t float your boat or you’re already done, Netflix is getting some more Steve Carell love this weekend.
Directed by Robert Zemeckis (Back to the Future), the story revolves around Mark Hogancamp, a man struggling with PTSD who, after being physically assaulted, creates a fictional village to ease his trauma.
The movie wasn’t particularly well-liked by critics at the time of release, but we think it’s a perfect weekend Netflix watch.
