After being teased on social media, the Sunrise x Shaft collaboration has been announced as the anime adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda’s manga Fool Night. Coming to Netflix in 2026, we have our first look at the exciting new anime!
Fool Night is an upcoming Japanese Netflix Original anime series and an adaptation of Kasumi Yasuda’s manga Fūru Naito. The series is a collaboration between animation studios Sunrise and Shaft. Directing the series is Atushi Yukawa (Space Dandy).
Sunrise is famous for producing the Gundam series, alongside other popular anime such as City Hunter, Code Geass, Gintama, Sacred Seven, Tiger & Bunny. Meanwhile, Shaft is known for the anime series The Quintessential Quintuplets, Magia Record, March Comes in Like a Lion, and Pretty Boy Detective Club.

When is Fool Night coming to Netflix?
Revealed at the 2026 Annecy Film Festival, Netflix has confirmed that Fool Night will be released sometime on the streaming service sometime in 2026.
An official teaser trailer has been released for Fool Night.
What is the plot of Fool Night?
Netflix has provided a synopsis for Fool Night:
“Transfloration— a technology that implants seeds into the bodies of those near death, transforming them into plants. It is the desperate measure humanity has chosen to ensure its survival. In a distant future where thick clouds cover the sky, trapping Earth in constant winter and night, most of the planet’s vegetation has withered away. Facing a serious oxygen shortage, humanity has built a society that relies on the meager amount of oxygen provided by Transfloration. A young man, Toshiro Kamiya, lives in poverty and works hard to pay taxes, cover living expenses, and afford medication for his mentally ill mother. However, the cruel reality around him gradually eats away at his hope.
In this dark world full of despair, he chooses the path of the “Spiriflor” — the plants that humans transform into.”
Who are the cast members of Fool Night?
