News has been slowly coming out about the next season of Stranger Things, which has now entered into production this week after a very long wait with the show impacted greatly by the strikes. In a new interview with the YouTube channel Steve Varley, actor Eduardo Franco has said he’s not currently involved in the fifth season likely ruling out the return of Argyle.

As a quick refresher, Argyle was introduced in season 4 following the Byers’ move to California and serves as Jonathan’s best friend throughout the series. The character is best known for his long hair and his job as a pizza delivery boy for Surfer Boy Pizza. He was an excellent and comedic addition to last season and quickly became a fan favorite.

The actor was interviewed for his recent role on Self-Reliance, which has been streaming on Hulu since January 3rd. Towards the end of the interview, Steve Varley asked the following:

“Before I let you go, I just want to ask real quick, because it’s on everyone’s mind. You don’t have to answer this, but fans kind of went to a panic with the cast photo of Day One of Stranger Things season five. Now they’re thinking you’re not in the season. Can you give us hopes that you are? And can you say anything if not? “

The photo in question was released by Netflix earlier this week, confirming that production had started on the fifth season. The big group photo featured Noah Schnapp, Millie Bobby Brown, David Harbour, Winona Ryder, Cara Buono, Joe Keery, Amybeth McNulty, Charlie Heaton, Brett Gelman, Maya Hawke, Natalia Dyer, Jamie Campbell Bower, Priah Ferguson, Linda Hamilton, Gaten Matarazzo, Caleb McLaughlin, Ross Duffer, Matt Duffer, Finn Wolfhard, and Sadie Sink.

Franco responded to the question by saying:

“It’s nice to hear that there’s, there’s some sort of, you know, concern or something, you know what I mean?  But I’ve never, I never got a phone call. So I think, yeah, I think that’s it.”

It shouldn’t come as too big a surprise that his character is omitted as the last we saw of him was back in the pizza place where Eleven went to battle Vecna. The next shot of them is after they’ve left the pizza place with Jonathan driving back to Hawkins with Argyle presumably left behind.

That’s ultimately very disappointing news given how iconic the character was in the most recent season of Stranger Things and especially disappointing given that he was with the gang
