Netflix and Working Title Films have teamed up for a new movie called Goodbye June, which will mark the directorial debut of Oscar-winning actress Kate Winslet. An all-star cast has been assembled, with Netflix confirming that the movie will release much sooner than initially expected, on December 24th globally with a limited UK theatrical rollout.
First unveiled, rather quietly, earlier this year, the movie entered production in and around London (including an extensive shoot at St Mary’s University Teddington campus in Twickenham) from February 24th to April 11th, 2025. On the wrap date, Toni Collette posted a story on Instagram saying, “Filming finished today. Didn’t want it to end. My heart breaks.”
While Kate Winslet is directing, the script was written by her son Joe Anders. Not much was initially known about the plot, but Goodbye June was initially described as a “contemporary fictional drama about a fractured group of siblings who pull together under sudden and trying circumstances.”
Netflix has now provided a full synopsis, though, reading:
“It’s nearly Christmas when an unexpected turn in their mother’s health thrusts four adult siblings, and their exasperating father, into chaos as they navigate messy family dynamics in the face of potential loss. But their quick-witted mother, June, orchestrates her decline on her own terms – with biting humor, blunt honesty, and a lot of love.”
As mentioned, the film is set to launch on December 24th and will be released in select UK cinemas beginning on December 12th.
