Lost in Space is finally returning for its second season before the end of 2019. Here’s what we know so far about season 2 including the official December 2019 release date, who’s starring in Lost in Space season 2, plot, details and more.

Netflix’s Lost in Space is a reboot and modern reimagining of the 1960s show of the same name and the movie that followed (no longer on Netflix, unfortunately).

The series is centered around a small colonist family that crash lands on a remote world after the spacecraft they were traveling in is attacked by alien robots.

The Robinson family and many other colonists barely survived the attack. After a crash landing on the foreign but habitable world, the colonists must learn to survive the hostile environment and find their way back to their mothership, The Resolute.

The series was met with mixed opinions upon release. While the series hasn’t been given critical acclaim, viewing figures and fan opinion was high enough for Netflix to greenlight a second season.

What can we expect from season 2 of Lost in Space?

*Spoilers for season 1 ahead*

The Robinson’s failed to make it back to The Resolute in time as an alien engine on their ship Jupiter 2 activated, warping both the ship and the crew to an entirely different galaxy. The alien robot attack was actually a retrieval mission as the engine onboard was stolen.

This was why The Resolute was originally attacked. The galaxy they are warped to is similar to the sand drawing the alien robot had drawn for Will. The robot gave Will the ominous warning of danger.

The Robinson’s will be seeking a way to leave the solar system they have been warped to. Not only are they at risk of the alien’s possible attempt to retrieve the stolen tech onboard Jupiter 2, but the two collapsing stars in the solar system could go supernova and the consequential blast would kill all life within it.

Maxwell Jenkins as Will Robinson (far left), Molly Parker as Maureen Robinson (center left), Taylor Russell as Judy Robinson (center right), and Mina Sundwall as Penny Robinson (far right).

Speaking to PopCulture in June 2019, Max Jenkins who plays Will Robinson said that season 2 is “going to be bigger than ever.” adding “We have Alex Grace as our producing director, he directed a few of the episodes in this season, and he’s really an amazing director, great person and great friend.”

We’ve had the first details drop on one of the planets we’ll be visiting in season 2. The new foreign planet will be dominated by oceans.

What is the current state of production?

Production has now concluded for Season 2 as it began in September 2018. Filming then reportedly wrapped in February 2019 where it then went into post-production.

The show has once again visited some fantastic locations for filming. Among the locations including Squamish, Manning Park, and the Lower Seymour Conservation Reserve in British Columbia. The Jupiter II is apparently a fleshed out set with no green screen.

The series entered post-production over the summer with first details leaking throughout fall 2019.

Filming once again took place in Vancouver in Canada.

The first trailer (see below) for Lost in Space season 2 released at NYCC 2019 as did the first poster for the upcoming second season.

When is the release date for Lost in Space season 2?

At NYCC 2019, Netflix announced that Lost in Space season 2 is returning to Netflix on Christmas Eve 2019. That’s December 24th, 2019.

The news was announced alongside a new cast member for the show which we’ve included above.

We did report earlier in the year that it’s likely to release on Netflix sometime in November 2019. The reason for this is that we spotted an Amazon listing for a book that’s “timed to coincide with the debut of season 2.” The description was altered soon after our report.
