One of the most foundational works of Australian literature is getting a fresh adaptation. Netflix has confirmed a new scripted series based on Miles Franklin’s iconic novel My Brilliant Career is coming in 2026. Filmed in South Australia and led by Phillipa Northeast, here is everything we know about the upcoming period drama.
Miles Franklin’s 1901 novel is a touchstone of Australian culture, famously adapted into the BAFTA-winning 1979 film starring Judy Davis and Sam Neill. Now, Netflix is bringing Sybylla Melvyn to a new generation with a series adaptation that promises to be “shockingly modern” while staying true to its turn-of-the-century setting. The project was first unveiled in June 2025.
The project was unveiled as part of Netflix’s massive “What Next?” slate reveal in February 2026.
What is the plot of My Brilliant Career?
Set in the unforgiving but beautiful landscape of rural Australia in 1901, the series centers on a young woman who refuses to fit into the box society has built for her.
The official Netflix synopsis reads:
“Sybylla is a shockingly modern young woman with one searing ambition: to be a writer. With an irrepressible taste for fun, the choice between adventure and a safe marriage is easy, until she falls in love. Should Sybylla marry, or should she throw herself to the winds of fate and risk a creative life?”
While the setting remains historical, Netflix’s Content Director for ANZ, Amanda Duthie, noted that the 2026 slate is about “revisiting classics with fresh creativity.” Expect a tone that bridges the gap between period drama and modern sensibilities, focusing on a woman determined to write her own way to independence.

Directing duties are shared by Alyssa McClelland and Anne Renton. The production team includes Chloe Rickard, Courtney Wise, and producer Paul Ranford.
Speaking at the time of the initial announcement, Liz Doran, Executive Producer & Writer, said about the project, “It’s been a privilege to work with so many incredible creatives on this reimagining of Miles Franklin’s rollicking tale of a young woman’s quest to determine her own life.”Executive Producer, Chloe Rickard, echoed those sentiments, adding, “It’s thrilling to bring this Australian classic to a whole new audience. Partnering with Netflix and fellow executive producers Liz Doran and Alyssa McClelland, with Philippa Northeast as our rebellious and witty Sybylla, has been the stuff that dreams are made of.”
The series was filmed entirely in South Australia, including Adelaide Studios, using the region’s distinct landscapes to recreate the world of 1901.

Netflix has confirmed a 2026 release date for the series.
While a specific month has not been announced, the streamer released a “First Look” photo in February 2026 (see at the top of the article), indicating the production is well underway.
