‘Outer Banks’ Season 5 Debuts Down on Prior Seasons With 9.4M Views In Opening Week on Netflix

Netflix pulled out all the stops for its fifth and final season of Outer Banks. Like many of its other flagship titles this year, it got the podcast companion treatment, in-person events, and a massive press push, but how did the top 10 data and first-week viewership data suggest it performed? Let’s find out! 

Reviews from critics continued to hold up season over season with another 100% in the bag on Rotten Tomatoes, and from my point of view, it was going to be interesting to see if the backlash from the untimely death of JJ from season 4 (who returned ever so slightly in season 5) would cause any substantial drop in viewership. You can somewhat see that in play with the audience score for season 5, which sits at 38%. Season 4 was at 47% because of that finale, while season 3 got 61%, season 2 76%, and season 1 85%. 

Interestingly, the series did not hold the top spot in the daily top 10 Netflix charts all weekend. That position, rather surprisingly, went to the new Nordic crime series Blood Sacrifice, which has taken the world by storm (more on that in our regularly scheduled top 10 report). 

Lighting up the global Top 10 charts in 84 countries beginning on August 21st (per FlixPatrol), the show immediately asserted dominance across its core English-speaking markets, holding a rock-solid #1 in Australia, New Zealand, and Ireland throughout its opening weekend. It also proved to be an absolute juggernaut across Eastern Europe, the Baltics, and the MENA region, with countries like Bulgaria, Egypt, Latvia, and Morocco locking the show in at #1 every single day. While the US and UK also saw strong #1 debuts, they notably slipped to #2 as the weekend closed out, though they remain heavily entrenched at the top of the board.

However, John B and the crew are definitely struggling to find their sea legs in a few key international markets. If we look at where the show is weakest, Asia and parts of Latin America stand out as major blind spots. The series completely fell out of the Top 10 in countries like Thailand, Singapore, and the Philippines within a few days of release, while South American markets like Peru and Bolivia barely scraped the bottom of the charts before disappearing entirely. Despite these regional drop-offs, the sheer volume of #1s across Europe and the Middle East proves Outer Banks is still a massive global heavy-hitter.

Moving over to Google Trends, their data, which covers search data collated into an index, suggests the show peaked in interest for season 2, with it steadily declining since then. Season 4 had a longer run because it was split into two parts, which season 5 didn’t do.

Netflix Top 10 Data for Outer Banks Season 5

Let’s get to the main point: how well did it do with views? 

Netflix’s official coverage for the title in the top 10s reads, “Audiences are relishing the latest treasures of Outer Banks, as its fifth and final season debuted at the top of the English TV list with 9.4 million views. The newest episodes of the young adult series see the North Carolina barrier island town’s working-class Pogues grappling with a major loss, and pursuing a stolen artifact that may have the power to change their fortunes. This marks the series’ fourth consecutive season to debut at the top of the list. OBX fans are also tuning in to the show’s five-season soundtrack, including The Pogues’ viral anthem, “Left Hand Free” by alt-J.”

For the week of August 17th to August 23rd, Outer Banks season 5 picked up 80.6M viewing hours, equating to that 9.4 million views number when you use the runtime of 8 hours and 32 minutes. That was enough to make it the #1 English-language show for the week, with My Brilliant Career sitting in second at 4.7M views. 

Here’s the show stacked up against prior seasons, but there are notable caveats to doing apples-to-apples comparisons:

• Season 1 was released before Netflix began dropping weekly data drops, so we can’t include that at all
• Season 2 notably released on a Friday vs a Thursday, so it had one day less to pick up views, as Netflix’s top 10 cut-off is on Sunday. 
• Season 4 is slightly higher because of its split-season nature (shorter runtime of the first 5 episodes, meaning it’s easier to get more views and not an entirely fair comparison) 
  • Note: Netflix and Chiffress have developed their own split-season formula, which puts the opening weekend at 13.7M views here. 

Ultimately, the series is down roughly 46% compared with its peak in season 3 and still got fewer views compared to season 2 despite having an extra day. 

Still though, Outer Banks has been successful for a while; how does this debut compare against other returning English-language shows released on a Thursday? There, season 5 stacks up relatively well. It’s not quite at the power levels of Ginny & Georgia or Emily in Paris, but certainly respectable against a lot of other shows across genres. 

While season 5 may be the final season of the main show, a prequel series is reportedly in active development, although not yet greenlit. What do these numbers tell Netflix about whether they should give it the thumbs up or thumbs down? We’ll find out in the coming months.
