Netflix is continuing to ramp up its massive Spanish-language slate with La Dama del Norte (translates to The Lady of the North) or its English name Queenpin, a brand-new crime drama that has just started production in Spain and Portugal. Here’s everything we know so far about the upcoming series.

Created by Daniel Écija—the prolific showrunner behind international hits like Locked Up (Vis a Vis) and Paco’s Men—the new 8-episode thriller is produced by Good Mood (Mediawan) exclusively for Netflix.

What is Queenpin about?

Based on the novel of the same name by Ulises Bértolo, the series is loosely inspired by the unbelievable true story of the female drug trafficker responsible for the largest cocaine stash ever seized in Spain during the 1990s.

Here is the official synopsis provided by Netflix:

La Dama del Norte chronicles the incredible story of Diana García, a young woman who flees to Madrid leaving a terrible past behind. Together with her friends Penélope and Maricarmen, she ends up at the head of one of the most ruthless drug cartels in 1990s Spain. In a world dominated by men, Diana imposes herself where they fall: she negotiates, leads, and survives. But her power wavers when Detective Medina, the only one capable of seeing the woman behind the criminal legend, crosses her path. The relationship between Diana and Medina, as intense as it is impossible, will put their loyalties in check: as the police and the cartel close the net, both must choose between justice, revenge… or a love that could condemn them both.”

Who is in the cast of Queenpin?

Fans of Spanish Netflix originals will be thrilled with the ensemble cast, which features several highly recognizable Netflix alums:

  • Elena Rivera (AlbaHeirs to the Land)
  • Maxi Iglesias, whom subscribers will instantly recognize from his swoon-worthy run on the hit comedy-drama Valeria.
  • Lola Rodríguez, who previously starred in the popular sci-fi thriller series Welcome to Eden and My Dearest Señorita .
  • Laura Weissmahr (Salve MariaA Lot of People Have to Die).

Rounding out the supporting cast are Myriam Gallego and Óscar de la Fuente, alongside other names yet to be announced.

Who is behind the series?

Good Mood (Mediawan), founded by creator and showrunner Daniel Écija, is the production company bringing the show to life. The studio has a strong track record of crafting stories that connect with audiences, having previously produced Spanish series like The Barrier (La Valla), Cristo y Rey, and Estoy Vivo.

Écija not only created the series but also serves as an executive producer and co-writer. The writing room is rounded out by Pablo Fajardo and Andrés Martín Soto (serving as script coordinators), alongside Ignacio Campón and Olga Salvador.

Directing duties for the eight episodes will be split between Esteban Crespo and Oskar Santos, with Daniel Aranyó serving as the director of photography. Joining Écija as co-executive producers are Andrés Arriaga, Javier Lorenzo, and Ana Gómez.

Where is the series filming and when will it release?

Production officially kicked off in mid-July 2026. According to Netflix, filming will take place across multiple stunning locations, including Madrid and the region of Galicia in Spain, as well as Porto in neighboring Portugal.

Netflix hasn’t set an official release date just yet. However, given the current production schedule, we’d expect La Dama del Norte to land on our screens sometime in 2027.
