Netflix’s new British crime drama Legends takes viewers back to the early 1990s. The six-part series follows a top-secret operation where ordinary Customs employees are sent undercover to infiltrate dangerous heroin smuggling rings. Naturally, a 1990s-set series needs a fitting soundtrack, and Legends delivers a solid lineup of era-appropriate tracks to set the scene.
Director Brady Hood was intentional about how the decade was portrayed on screen. Rather than viewing the era with a nostalgic filter, Hood aimed to capture its true energy, explaining:
“I didn’t want to look back at the ’90s through a sepia lens. From what I recall of the ’90s, it was vibrant and exciting; tracksuits and pills and dance music. I wanted to capture that exuberant nature…”
Music also played a practical role behind the scenes for the cast. To help the actors navigate the headspace of their dual roles, Hood used music as a character-building exercise:
“One other little thing I did early on was ask all the actors to send me a couple of songs each: one they’d listen to at home, which was more of a guilty pleasure, then one that they’d play in front of a crowd, in their legend. It was a nice way to see where they were coming from.”
