With April just around the corner, we’re getting ready to kick back with some fresh new shows and movies landing on Netflix. 

While there’s plenty more content arriving on Netflix regionally, this list covers all of the Netflix Originals arriving in April 2021. Generally speaking, the following shows and movies will be available to stream anywhere in the world, as long as you have a Netflix account.

Prank Encounters (Season 2)

Although originally releasing to controversy those that stuck with it (which let’s face it was mainly Gaten and Stranger Things fans) found a prank show that has high production values even if the show’s content could be questionable.

Seven new episodes arrive on April 1st, AKA April Fools Day.


Worn Stories (Season 1)

Jenji Kohan is involved in this new docu-series that seeks to tell the stories of various clothes garments and the people that wear them.

It’s adapted from the book of the same name.


Concrete Cowboy (2021)

Ricky Straub writes and directs this movie that debuted at awards shows last year. The movie features Idris Elba and Caleb McLaughlin about a young boy who is set to live with his estranged father in Philadelphia.


Thunder Force (2021)

Netflix Release Date: April 9th

Melissa McCarthy and Octavia Spencer headline this new superhero comedy feature directed and written by Ben Falcone (who is currently working on his next Netflix project).


Dad Stop Embarrassing Me (Season 1)

This new sitcom is partially based on Jamie Foxx’s real-life relationship with his daughter Connie.

Here’s how Netflix describes the new sitcom:

“Full of heart and humor, Dad Stop Embarrassing Me! is inspired by Foxx’s real-life relationship with daughter Corinne Foxx, who also serves as executive producer. The multi-cam sitcom reunites Foxx with showrunner Bentley Kyle Evans (The Jamie Foxx Show) and is directed by Ken Whittingham (black-ish).”

Jamie Foxx, Heather Hemmens, David Alan Grier, Valente Rodriguez, Proscha Coleman and Kyla-Drew star.


Shadow and Bone (Season 1)

Netflix loves a fantasy series, and the upcoming Shadow and Bone looks like one of its biggest so far.

Based on the popular Grishaverse novels by Leigh Bardugo, this fantasy-adventure series is set in the imaginary, Russian-inspired Kingdom of Ravka. The realm is plagued by darkness and terrifying creatures that devour human flesh. Alina Starkov, a young soldier, inadvertently discovers an incredible power that could help unite her country. However, as she starts to hone her skills, even more dangerous forces attempt to overpower her.

Yasuke (Season 1)

From the visionary creator LeSean Thomas (Canonbusters) comes a brand new six-episode anime series set in Japan. The story follows a samurai warrior of African descent who goes back to his old life in order to protect a mysterious girl.


Things Heard and Seen (Movie)

Arriving at the end of April, this chilling new horror Original looks to be worth the wait.

Catherine, a talented young artist (Amanda Seyfried), and her husband (James Norton) decide to leave Manhattan, opting for a simpler life in a small rural town. However, it doesn’t take long for things to unravel. Catherine starts to suspect that the history of their home harbors a dark secret, but does their marriage have one too?

Things Heard and Seen also stars Natalia Dyer (Stranger Things), Karen Allen (Raiders of the Lost Ark), Rhea Seehorn (Better Call Saul), and F. Murray Abraham (The Grand Budapest Hotel).

Coven of Sisters 

Netflix Release Date: April 1st

The Spanish period drama will be re-added to Netflix available with the English dub.

In this mysterious drama, a group of 17th-century women accused of witchcraft must use all their powers to escape execution.


The Serpent 

Netflix Release Date: April 2nd

BBC/Netflix co-production starring Jenna Colman. Based on the true story of the notorious serial killer, Charles Sohraj, who became the world’s most-wanted man during the 1970s.

The series first launched on BBC television in the UK on New Year’s Day 2021, to much critical and viewer acclaim.

Dolly Parton: A MusiCares Tribute (2021) 

Netflix Release Date: April 7th

In 2019, Dolly Parton became the first country artist to be awarded the MusiCares Person of the Year accolade. In honor of Queen Dolly, this star-studded concert features tribute performances from the likes of  Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus, Kacey Musgraves, Willie Nelson and Chris Stapleton.


This Is a Robbery: The World’s Biggest Art Heist (Limited Series)

Netflix Release Date: April 7th

Docu-series on how two men in the 1990s conned their way into the Boston art museum, simply by dressing as police officers. Their actions sparked a global search for missing art worth over half a billion dollars.


Fast and Furious Spy Racers (Season 4) 

Netflix Release Date: April 16th

The fourth season to the animated series based on the Fast and Furious movie franchise. After being framed for a crime they didn’t commit, the team is forced to flee to Mexico.


Arlo The Aligator Boy

Netflix Release Date: April 16th

Part of Netflix’s stellar animation lineup for 2021 is Arlo The Aligator Boy which will also see a series produced in its honor too.

The movie comes from Titmouse who is the same studio behind Big Mouth, The Epic Tales of Captain Underpants, and Cleopatra in Space.

Here’s what you can expect from the feature:

“A young humanoid alligator travels to the big city in hopes of reuniting with his estranged father, meeting a colorful cast of characters along the way.”

Among the voice cast for the feature are Jennifer Coolidge, Annie Potts, Tony Hale, Bret Gelman, and Flea.


STOWAWAY (2021)

Netflix Release Date: April 22nd

This claustrophobic sci-fi thriller starring Anna Kendrick and Toni Collette is already marked to be a big hit.

Shortly after their lift-off from Earth, the crew of a spaceship on a two-year mission to Mars discovers an accidental stowaway on board. With resources dwindling fast, only the ship’s medic (Kendrick) is the voice of reason not beguiled by the unexpected passenger.

Yasuke (Season 1)

Netflix Release Date: April 29th

Yusuke is the newest series from the visionary producer, LeSean Thomas. The anime tells the story of a real historical figure named Yasuke: the only known Black Samurai.

Here’s the official synopsis provided by Netflix:

In a war-torn feudal Japan filled with mechs and magic, the greatest ronin never known, Yasuke, struggles to maintain a peaceful existence after a past life of violence. But when a local village becomes the center of social upheaval between warring daimyo, Yasuke must take up his sword and transport a mysterious child who is the target of dark forces and bloodthirsty warlords.

The Mitchells Vs the Machines (2021)

Netflix Release Date: April 30th

Don’t be fooled into thinking this animated feature is just for kids: The Mitchells Vs the Machines looks promising enough to be enjoyed by the whole family.

Katie’s plans of meeting new friends at college are thrown out the window when her nature-loving dad, Rick, plans a family road trip. Rick’s plans for some family bonding are also interrupted when tech from all across the world, from cell phones to home appliances attempt a world takeover. With the help of two friendly robots, the Mitchells must overcome their family issues if they are to save the world.

Madame Claude (2021)

Writer and director Sylvie Verheyde arrive on Netflix with this brand new period drama set in Paris.

Snabba Cash (Season 1)

Following the events of the popular film trilogy that released in Sweden, this series is set 10 years later. It’s about a young woman trying to make it big in the world of business but she finds herself up against it getting involved with the criminal underbelly of the start-up scene.


The Way of the Househusband

Language: Japanese
Netflix Release Date: April 8th

An incredibly popular anime series based on the manga series will be making its first debut on Netflix internationally after airing in Japan on Nippon TV last October.


Night in Paradise

Language: Korean
Netflix Release Date: April 9th

This gangster movie originating out of South Korea is dubbed as a Noir Film that first debuted at the Venice International Film Festival and will now be making its way onto Netflix.

Night in Paradise revolves around a man who is being targetted by gangsters.

The movie is directed by Park Hoon-jung and stars Um Tae-goo, Jeon Yeo-been, and Cha Seoung-won.


Zero (Season 1)

Language: Italian
Netflix Release Date: April 21st

Zero is a coming-of-age story about a young man who has the ability to become invisible and along with his friends has to fight to save their neighborhood.

The music in the show is being heavily promoted too. In fact, the teaser trailer (seen below) features exclusive new music from Marracash.


The Disciple (2020)

Language: Bengali
Netflix Release Date: TBC

New Indian drama movie. From IMDb:

“Self-doubt, sacrifice and struggle converge into an existential crisis for a devoted classical vocalist as the mastery he strives for remains elusive.”


Searching for Sheela (2021)

Language: Hindi
Netflix Release Date: TBC

The mysterious character of Ma Anand Sheela will be familiar to fans who watched the recent Netflix documentary, Wild Wild Country.

Searching For Sheela continues the story, with the former Rajneesh commune spokeswoman returning to India for a long-awaited interview tour.


Sky High (2021)

Language: Spanish
Netflix Release Date: April 2nd

A gritty thriller about a mechanic and his new girlfriend who both take part in high stake heists. Goya Award winners Luis Tosar and Miguel Herrán star in this action thriller with Carolina Yuste and Fernando Cayo.

Ride or Die (2021)

Language: Japanese
Netflix Release Date: April 15th

Japanese LGBT thriller based on Ching Nakamura’s comic “Gunjo”.

Rei, still in love with her classmate Nanae, discovers that her friend is suffering from domestic abuse at the hands of her husband. In a violent declaration of love to Nanae, Rei murders the husband, but winds up causing Nanae to fear her, and is repulsed by the murder. But when the pair ultimately turn to each other for love, Rei and Nanae begin to struggle with their complicated emotions.

Luis Miguel: The Series (Season 2)

The final half of the biopic series on the Mexican superstar, Luis Miguel. It’s been almost three years since season 1 dropped on Netflix, but season 2 promises to complete the story of “The Sun of Mexico”.
