New German Series Coming to Netflix in 2024 & Beyond

Constantin Television (the production company behind Dear Child / Liebes Kind) is producing this adaptation of the 2019 crime thriller by Karsten Dusse. Emily Cox and Tom Schilling have been cast so far. Max Zähle and Martina Plura are directing.

The story revolves around Björn Diemel, a successful lawyer whose wife forces him to attend a mindfulness seminar. The aim is to improve his marriage, prove himself as a good father, and restore his work-life balance, which has gone awry. Instead of taking the lessons for his person life, he takes them for his professional life while working for a mafia boss.

Cassandra (Limited Series)

Directed and written by Benjamin Gutsche, this new mini-series is confirmed to be arriving on Netflix in 2024. Set across six episodes, the sci-fi series is almost certainly our most anticipated new debut show from Germany in 2024.

Per Netflix, here’s the official logline for the new series:

“Since its owners perished under mysterious circumstances over 50 years ago, Germany’s oldest smart home has remained empty. In the present day, as Samira and her family move in, the electronic household helper Cassandra awakens from her decades-long slumber.”

Lavinia Wilson, Mina Tander, Michael Klammer, Franz Hartwig, Mary Tölle, Joshua Kantara, Elias Grünthal, and Filip Schnack are among the cast.

Criminel (Season 1)

Viola Film and Wiedemann & Berg Film are teaming up for this new crime thriller series that sees a family man now living in Berlin peacefully, finding that his past is quickly catching up with him. Marvin Kren is behind the new series with Svenja Jung, Kida Khodr Ramadan, and Frederick Lau attached to star.

Kleo (Season 2)

First debuting in 2022, Kleo is a period drama thriller following an East German spy who is hunting down the people who betrayed her. The show was quickly given a season 2 renewal, which started production in 2023 and has already released a first-look teaser trailer.

Netflix has confirmed via its app that the show’s second season is definitely coming in 2024.

Plötzlich Kanzlerin / Suddenly Chancellor (Season 1)

This new political comedy series will consist of eight episodes and is confirmed to be released in 2024.

The show is about conservative politician Christine Kilonzo-Krämer is elected Germany’s first Black Chancellor overnight following the involvement of her predecessor and main competitor in a scandal.

Jünglinge Film is behind the new series, with Paraz Shariat directing and Paulina Lorenz, Faraz Shariat, and Amelia Umuhire writing.

Initially, I hesitated to include this one, as it leans more towards being a US-based project. However, considering that the creators are German and have previously produced another multilingual show for Netflix, I deemed it worth mentioning.

The series is an adaptation of the BOOM! comic book series, which was initially announced to be adapted with Mike Flanagan at the helm. As time passed, Flanagan left the project, and it was announced that German duo Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar took over the reigns. This duo is renowned for their three-season sci-fi series DARK and, more recently, the multilingual, high-budget show 1899, which was unfortunately canceled after just one season.

The Signal (Limited Series)

Bon Voyage Films are behind this new mini-series that’ll consist of four episodes and looks to share strong vibes with Spaceman, which Netflix is releasing in March 2023, and Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar.

Here’s the official synopsis for the series that will star Florian David Fitz, Peri Baumeister, Yuna Bennett, and Nilam Farooq:

“Paula is a scientist aboard the International Space Station. She disappears without a trace on her flight home to her family, leaving Sven and his daughter with a riddle which could shake the entire earth. Up there, in the depths of space, Paula made an unbelievable discovery.”

The series is set to touch down on Netflix globally on March 7th, 2024.

Netflix is also doing a German version of its reality dating series Love is Blind. Also on the rumors list, we’ve got Tyll, a fantasy series that’s based on the Daniel Kehlmann book that would come from Jantje Friese and Baran bo Odar. No word on what’s going on with that, nor do we have any information on Night Hunters from the duo following the project registration in May 2023.

A few Netflix shows from Germany are also still waiting for renewal decisions to be announced. These include:

  • Barbarians (Season 3) – We’ve heard conflicting reports on this one as to whether it’ll be coming back.
  • Surviving Summer (Season 3) – No word on the future of this teen drama that Netflix exclusively releases alongside ZDF.
  • The Last World (Season 2) – A comedy-drama that first debuted in September 2020 – unlikely to return given the length of time.
