The ton is buzzing once again! Production for Bridgerton season 5 is in full swing (as Netflix UK just teased again yesterday), and while fans endure the long wait for the hit Netflix period drama’s return, the rumor mill is churning with exciting new updates. With the spotlight shifting to a groundbreaking new romance, we finally have some fresh details straight from the set. From author Julia Quinn’s glowing behind-the-scenes report and our latest intel on a filming wrap date, to a slew of new cast additions and a bittersweet update on a fan-favorite returning star, here is everything we’ve recently learned about the highly anticipated fifth season.
Julia Quinn, the author behind the books the show is based on and executive producer on the series, has just completed a set visit at Netflix’s secretive Shepperton Studios in London and wrote in a new post:
“Back home after an AMAZING two-day visit to the Bridgerton set. As usual, I’m sworn to secrecy and can share no photos, but what I CAN say is this:
The costumes are extra gorgeous.
I didn’t get to see all the actors, but I saw a lot of them and it’s always so nice to catch up.
Most of the actors bring books to set, and they read a lot when they’re not on.
The set is truly a warm and wonderful place to be—everyone really likes working there, which isn’t always the case in Hollywood.
The season is going to be so beautiful and spectacular (okay, this is also based on having read all the scripts.)”

When does Bridgerton season 5, codenamed New Cross, wrap up production? Our latest intel suggests they’re targeting a wrap on or around October 19th, 2026. Of course, the series has already ruled out a return in 2026, but given this timeline, we expect a late Spring/Summer 2027 return.
Among the directors we know are attached to season 5 are Tom Verica, Gia- Rayne Harris, and Jaffar Mahmood.
Elsewhere, Shondaland.com just recently published a new piece on Bridgerton that includes a new take and/or synopsis on what we can expect going into season 5:
“Bridgerton’s fifth season will be the first to star a queer female couple. The audience will follow Francesca and Michaela as they come to terms with a growing attraction between them while having to navigate the Regency world. Francesca is the most subdued of the Bridgerton children, so her romance with Michaela will also be about igniting a desire that matches what her mother and older siblings have told her. And we’ll see that manifested with a dark-skinned Black woman as the romantic lead.”
Naturally, this new primary storyline brings in a few fresh faces closely tied to Francesca (Hannah Dodd) and Michaela (Masali Baduza). It was recently confirmed that Tega Alexander will play Christopher Anderson, the Casanova son of Lord Anderson; Jacqueline Boatswain is set to play Michaela’s mother, Helen Stirling; and Gemma Knight Jones joins as Lady Elizabeth Ashworth, a close confidante and London guide for Michaela.
As for returning cast members, the most significant update to come out of August 2026 revolves around our favorite gossip writer. Nicola Coughlan (Penelope Bridgerton) recently confirmed she will be taking a notable step back from the series, admitting in interviews that taking a reduced role in season 5 is “bittersweet”. Coughlan is currently juggling her limited Bridgerton appearances while simultaneously filming Only Murders in the Building and Netflix’s upcoming Roald Dahl adaptation, Tales of the Unexpected, as we scooped yesterday. But fear not, as she assured fans, “I’ll always pop back to Bridgerton if they want me”.

Important Note: Netflix declined to comment on these roles. Our understanding, however, is that any and all major new and returning major additions to the cast have already been announced. Given this, the amount of screen time these characters get in the final edit remains to be seen, but we know the Bridgerton community dines out on crumbs, so here we are!
With those caveats in mind, here’s who we’ve discovered are attached in smaller roles in season 5:
- Natasha Joseph, whose extensive acting history includes roles in popular television series like Sex Education, One Day, and Call The Midwife, as well as Florian Zeller’s upcoming film Bunker, will be playing the role of Lady Gant.
- Elena Saurel, whose notable television history includes series regular and recurring roles in shows like the BBC comedy We Might Regret This, HBO’s Industry, and ITV2’s Buffering, will be playing the role of Miss Ortiz.
- Declan O’Connor, whose acting credits include television shows like Slow Horses and All Creatures Great And Small, as well as the romantic comedy film Upgraded, will be playing the role of Lord Paiva.
- Tre Jordan Holmes, whose acting history includes a role in the HBO Max series Dune: Prophecy as well as stage productions like Seven Guitars and Richard III, will be playing the role of Lord Woods.
