It’s time to pour it out one last time, Serenity. Netflix has officially opted not to renew Sweet Magnolias for season 6, bringing the beloved feel-good drama to a close after five seasons and 50 episodes.
The news, first reported late on a Friday exclusively by Deadline, confirms that the series starring JoAnna Garcia Swisher, Brooke Elliott, and Heather Headley will not be returning to our screens. The decision comes after the cast options were reportedly allowed to expire on Thursday night, with the official cancelation coming down on Friday.
We’ve been keeping a close eye on the show’s status on our master list of Netflix shows awaiting renewals or cancelations as of mid-2026. Unfortunately, the writing has been on the wall for a little while, as Netflix notably broke from its usual pattern with established hits by not commissioning a season 6 writers’ room ahead of the season 5 premiere.
Viewership had been notably trending down season over season, with season 5 down 25% as of week two compared to season 4. Here’s a breakdown of the viewership for the series (noting that season 2 launched on a Friday compared to the Thursdays later seasons did with Netflix’s reporting period being Monday to Sunday):
While we won’t get a season 6 to tie up the loose ends we discussed in our season 5 ending explained piece, showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson noted that they always strived to give audiences emotional satisfaction alongside the cliffhangers. The series finale appropriately concluded with the Magnolias sharing their signature margarita toast albeit there are plenty of story lines we would’ve liked to have seen wrapped up in some fashion.
Following the cancellation news, the Sweet Magnolias writers shared a heartfelt parting message to their fans, cast, and crew on Instagram. You can read the beautiful tribute in full below:
“All grand adventures must eventually end. And here, dear friends, is where ours does.
SWEET MAGNOLIAS is now complete with five seasons streaming on Netflix.
To our outstanding cast and crew: You are Serenity. This show would not be what it is without your hard work and dedication and love. Some days were long, some days were hard, many days were rainy. But work is lighter and more joyful when shared with people like you. Whether you were with us for a single day or for all five seasons, you left your mark on our sweet town in South Carolina. Be proud of what you’ve done.
To our partners at DLP Productions: Thank you for starting the party. Thank you for bringing all these pieces and people together. It takes a village, and look at the village you helped amass.
To our partners at Netflix: Thank you for the journey. Seven years! Five seasons! And every day filled with love and collaboration for our story and for each other.

Many fans in the comments were not impressed with the characterization that the series is “now complete.”

It’s not all heartbreak for fans of the show’s creative team, however, as Netflix has officially greenlit a brand-new drama series titled Ladies of the House, choosing to move forward with the new project rather than a sixth season of Sweet Magnolias.
The new series will reunite showrunner Sheryl J. Anderson with JoAnna Garcia Swisher, who is set to executive produce and is eyed to star. Loosely based on Lauren Edmondson’s novel—a modern retelling of Sense and Sensibility—the series follows a mother and two adult daughters who must battle through their messy interpersonal issues to save their family winery after the charismatic owner’s unexpected death.
Netflix TUDUM, which completely omits Sweet Magnolias, won’t return, invites you to “Pour yourself a glass” (yes, really, the motto is really that similar to the Sweet Magnolias motto) for the new series, but for many, will the journey be worth taking if the show’s fate may end the same way?
