Anthony and Joe Russo are diligently working on several projects for Netflix and other platforms through their production company, AGBO. Recently, their website received a new look. Here’s a summary of those updates, along with a preview of their past Netflix projects, upcoming releases, and works in development.

Beginning their careers in the world of comedy, they’ve more recently expanded into multiple other genres, with their biggest titles to date being their entries in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, having directed and written by Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: End Game. The latter of those movies is the highest-grossing movie of all time.

The duo have also produced or worked on the Apple TV+ movie Cherry starring Tom Holand and Everything Everywhere All At Once for A24.

The Gray Man and Extraction Universes

The biggest two titles the duo have produced for Netflix so far have been The Gray Man and Extraction (which saw a sequel release in 2023). On the AGBOVERSE website, these two titles are classified differently from AGBO’s other movies and series in that they’re Universes. They’re listed alongside Pizza Film School and Prime Video’s Citadel.

In the case of Extraction, we’ve seen two movies released thus far, both having ranked in Netflix’s all-time top 10 list at one point. A third movie was semi-announced by Chris Hemsworth at TUDUM 2023.

The Gray Man, which ranks fifth in the most-watched Netflix Original movies list, was given a sequel order soon after the first movie was released on Netflix in addition to a spin-off film that’s “set to explore a different element of The Gray Man universe.”

AGBO Movies and Series Currently Available on Netflix

Here’s a look at all the other AGBO movies and series you can find on Netflix:

  • Arrested Development – Before being involved with big budget action movies and Marvel movies, the pair began their working careers in television and specifically comedy. The pair worked as directors and producers on Arrested Development, which is available on Netflix globally. The series was recently set to leave Netflix but has been renewed and will stay until at least 2026.
  • Community – Following that show, the pair worked on the early seasons of the NBC series Community, which is again available on Netflix worldwide. The pair notably directed the paintball episodes, which landed them the Marvel gigs.
  • Mosul (Netflix Original) – Serving as producers, this action movie that was released exclusively on Netflix in 2019 is about a police unit from Mosul fighting to liberate an Iraqi city. It was directed and written by Matthew Michael Carnahan.

For some time, Netflix US streamed Happy Endings, the ABC sitcom, but it departed in 2022.

The Electric State Coming in 2024?

The Electric State Movie

The duo’s next major project comes in the form of a highly anticipated and expensive movie, The Electric State. The duo is directing the feature film, which is pegged to be over $200M, with Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely writing.

Here’s a rundown of what you can expect from the story that will star Millie Bobby Brown, Chris Pratt, Stanley Tucci, Jason Alexander, Brian Cox, Jenny Slate, and Billy Bob Thornton:

“Set in an alternative future, it tells the story of a teenage girl who realizes that a strange but sweet robot who comes to her has actually been sent by her missing brother. She and the robot set out to find the brother in an imaginative world of humans mixing with robots all shapes and sizes, and uncover a grand conspiracy in the process.”

The release year of 2024 for The Electric State has been acknowledged for some time. The Russo Brothers initially confirmed the release year to Variety last year, but the title was conspicuously absent from the lineup at the Next on Netflix event in February 2024. The AGBOVERSE website seemingly reconfirms the 2024 release date, even though there are reshoots planned for the early part of this year.

AGBO Movies Previously Announced to Be in Development

In the case of the following movies, they’ve all been announced, but beyond initial announcements, very little has been announced. The only except is The Whisper Man, which will kick this section off:

The Whisper Man

The Whisper Man James Ashcroft

We first got word back in April 2022 that Netflix was eying the upcoming adaptation of the Alex North novel The Whisper Man. That came a few years after when it was first announced back in July 2018 that the Russo Brothers had optioned the rights to the book.

The book’s story is about a father and son caught in the crosshairs of an investigation to catch a serial killer preying on a small town.

In 2023, we got a little more on the new movie with James Ashcroft set to direct with Chase Palmer and Ben Jacoby writing.

Past Midnight

TJ Fixman is the writer of this superhero action movie with Rick Famuyiwa directing that was first announced all the way back in 2018, but six years on, it looks like it’s on the back burner.

The most recent update from the duo came in 2019 during an interview with Inverse, where they mentioned, “Past Midnight is still in a very formative stage. It’s probably best not to discuss it yet, but it is a captivating script.”

High-profile actors, including Chris Pine and Arnold Schwarzenegger, were initially rumored to join the project, with Fixman confirming in June 2019 that it would be Keanu Reeves front and center.

Following his rise to fame from roles in Netflix’s Bridgerton and The Gray Man, Regé-Jean Page is set to star in a new heist movie directed by Noah Hawley, which was first announced in September 2021.

Hawley, known for his contributions to Fargo and Legion, will lead the project with The Russo Brothers as producers.

As of February 2024, little still is known about the development or status of the project.

Before we leave, we should mention The Bluff.  First announced in March 2021, Zoe Saldana was the initial actor linked to this drama, directed by Frank E. Flowers and co-written by Flowers and Joe Ballarini. Netflix dropped the project and has since been rescued by Amazon.
