New Indian Movies on Netflix: February 2024

Black (2005)

Language: Hindi
Runtime: 124 Minutes
Director: Sanjay Leela Bhansali
Cast: Amitabh Bachchan, Rani Mukerji, Shernaz Patel
Genre: Drama | Added to Netflix: February 3

Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s 2005 touching drama Black finally makes its streaming debut! Inspired by the play The Miracle Worker, Bhansali’s film follows a blind and deaf girl named Michelle as she learns to communicate with the guidance of an unconventional teacher. Black differs from the play in that it follows Michelle into adulthood, confronting the changes in her relationship with her teacher as she becomes as woman and as he exhibits signs of dementia. Black is a great film to watch in advance of the release of Bhansali’s first streaming series, the Netflix Original Heeramandi (which we previewed here).

Guntur Kaaram (2024)

Languages: Telugu, Hindi, Kannada, Malayalam, & Tamil
Runtime: 162 Minutes
Director: Trivikram Srinivas
Cast: Mahesh Babu, Sreeleela, Meenakshi Chaudhary
Genre: Action, Drama | Added to Netflix: February 8

As a boy, Ramana’s mother abandoned him to start a new family after he was injured in a factory explosion and his father was sent to jail for murder. Decades later, Ramana’s mother wants to run for office, so she asks him to sign a document stating that he isn’t her son. Ramana uses the chance to demand answers, and, boy, are they complicated. Each language version of Guntur Kaaram has a separate catalogue entry.

Bhakshak (2024) N

Languages: Hindi, English, Polish, Portuguese (Brazil), Spanish (Latin America), Tamil, & Telugu
Runtime: 134 Minutes
Director: Pulkit
Cast: Bhumi Pednekar, Sanjay Mishra, Aditya Srivastava
Genre: Crime, Drama | Added to Netflix: February 9

Bhumi Pednekar gives a compelling performance as a reporter who gets a hold of a government report alleging abuse at a home for orphan girls — only no one in the government seems interested in doing anything about it. Her investigation uncovers connections between the influential man who runs the girls’ home and the very agencies tasked with protecting children. With the abusers manipulating the system to their own sinister ends, she must turn their own tactics against them in order to save the vulnerable girls. Additional dialogue options are available in Bhakshak‘s audio menu.

Dunki (2023)

Languages: Hindi, Portuguese (Brazil), & Spanish (Latin America)
Runtime: 160 Minutes
Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Cast: Shah Rukh Khan, Taapsee Pannu, Boman Irani
Genre: Comedy, Social Issue Drama | Added to Netflix: February 15

Blockbuster director Rajkumar Hirani and superstar Shah Rukh Khan team up for the first time in the comedy-drama Dunki. Khan plays Hardy, a former soldier who helps his lady love Manu (Taapsee Pannu) and her two friends on a dangerous attempt to illegally immigrate to England. Hirani’s depiction of the unfairness of global immigration policies is persuasive, but the inconsistent tone of the film veers between light comedy and visceral violence. Additional dialogue options are available in Dunki‘s audio menu.

Chhota Bheem Shakti Astra Ki Khoj (2023)

Language: Hindi
Runtime: 66 Minutes
Director: Sumit Das, Akshay Sanjeev Chavan
Cast: Sonal Kaushal
Genre: Kids, Animation | Added to Netflix: February 29

The king of planet Shakti Grah sends Bheem and his friends into the forest to retrieve a magical weapon. When another man arrives claiming to be the real king, Bheem must determine which of them is telling the truth.

New Indian Series on Netflix: February 2024

The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth (2024) N

Languages: English, German, Hindi, Polish, Spanish (Latin America), Tamil, & Telugu
Seasons: 1
Episodes: 4
Genre: True Crime, Docuseries | Added to Netflix: February 29

Netflix was forced to delay the release of The Indrani Mukerjea Story: Buried Truth until India’s Central Bureau of Investigation could review it to ensure it wouldn’t influence witnesses in an ongoing court case. Former media executive Indrani Mukerjea is currently out on bail awaiting trial for the 2012 murder of her daughter Sheena Bora, whom she’d tried to pass off as her younger sister. Mukerjea told friends and family that Bora had cut contact after moving from Mumbai to the United States, so the younger woman’s death wasn’t discovered until 2015. Additional dialogue options — including English and Hindi audio description tracks — are available in the show’s audio menu.
