Sci-fi films on Netflix have a very intriguing reputation, especially the Originals. While not all of the films have garnered huge success, nevertheless they are enjoyable to just sit back and watch. One such film we’ve been looking forward to the release of is I Am Mother, starring Hilary Swank. I Am Mother is an upcoming Australian-American Netflix Original sci-fi film. The screenplay for the film was written by Michael Lloyd Green, who previously worked on two short films in the late noughties, therefore I Am Mother is the first feature-length film by the screenplay. Aspiring director Grant Sputore has been given his first feature-length film to direct. The most notable names attached to the film are actresses Hilary Swank and Rose Byrne.


What is the plot of I Am Mother?

In the aftermath of a global extinction that wiped humanity from the face of the Earth, a teenage girl is being raised in an underground facility. Attending to her is ‘Mother’ a robot whose function is to help assist the re-population of Earth. But when a blood-drenched woman arrives unexpectedly, the nature of Mother is called into question as the teenage girl begins to wonder what other lies of the outside world she has been told. As her curiosity leads her to question Mother her true nature is revealed along with the greater mission the robot has been tasked with.

When and where did production take place for I Am Mother?

For a film that’s only receiving its distribution in the Summer of 2019 many will be surprised to know that filming began in the Fall of 2017.

Filming began on the 14th of October and concluded on the 3rd of January 2018. Due to the special effects of the film, post-production lasted around 6 months concluding on the 3rd of July 2018.

Filming took place in Adelaide, Australia at the Adelaide Studios. Production was carried out by The Penguin Empire.


What is the run time for I Am Mother?

I Am Mother has a run time of 115 minutes. Not too long and not too short!


When is the release date?

I Am Mother will be coming to Netflix on June 7th, 2019.

The Original film has already debuted in 2019. At the Sundance Film Festival on the 25th of January, I Am Mother made its debut.

Only selected regions will have access to I Am Mother. Currently, we know all the territories in North America. We can expect the film to be distributed in most European countries. As the film will be released theatrically in July in Australia and New Zealand, I Am Mother will not be available in those regions.

What’s the reception for I Am Mother so far?

The critics’ response has been a mixed bag, depending on which site you’re looking at.

At the time of writing on Rotten Tomatoes, I Am Mother has a fresh rating of 86% from 21 reviews. Meanwhile, on Metacritic, the result is less than flattering with only a rating of 56%.

IMDb currently has a rating of 6.2 out of 10. As anyone can submit a rating to IMDb it’s always best to take the rating with a pinch of salt.
