In August, we revealed that Netflix has lined up Nightmares of Nature, a groundbreaking new natural history and horror hybrid from Blumhouse Television and Plimsoll Productions, set to release at the end of September. More details have now been released with the series set to debut with two seasons back-to-back this fall: season 1 (Cabin in the Woods) on September 30th and season 2 (Lost in the Jungle) on October 28th, 2025. Here are more details and new first looks.

First unveiled in July 2023 (albeit without Netflix attached at the time) with production wrapping up just recently, the docu-series is now ready for release. Across multiple episodes and two seasons, the series showcases animal heroes struggling to endure the real-life terrors of the natural world. It reimagines natural history filmmaking through a horror lens, where trees bleed, zombie snails crawl, and vampire fish rule the waters. Among the creatures we’ll see in these episodes are a little frog, a baby crocodile, snakes, raccoons, and mice.

“It’s only natural to be scared about the things that go bump in the night, but Nightmares of Nature isn’t a projection of the supernatural. Once you start looking at the natural world, you will find things as terrifying as anything in a horror movie,” Alan Eyres, Head of Plimsoll USA, has said in a previous statement. “To tell that story, we could not hope for better collaborators than Blumhouse. Combining the world’s greatest horror filmmakers with some of the world’s best natural history storytellers is a unique opportunity to create a more visceral, emotional point of entry to nature than anything we’ve seen before.”

Maya Hawke is providing the narration for the two new seasons, having become one of Netflix’s most recognizable stars in recent years and joining an elite list of nature doc narrators for Netflix, which includes Barack Obama and David Attenborough.

Hawke first broke out on the platform with her fan-favorite role as Robin Buckley, introduced in season 3 of Stranger Things. Beyond Stranger Things, Hawke has also appeared in Netflix Originals like Do Revenge, a dark teen comedy where she starred opposite Camila Mendes, and Fear Street Part One: 1994, part of Netflix’s popular horror trilogy. Outside of Netflix, she has taken roles in Quentin Tarantino’s Once Upon a Time in Hollywood and Wes Anderson’s Asteroid City, while also pursuing a music career with two albums to date.
