Nickelback Hate To Love Coming To Netflix

Hate to Love: Nickelback is headed for Netflix. We’ve learned the new documentary is scheduled to hit the streamer in the United States starting on June 26th, 2024.

First making its world premiere at TIFF (Toronto International Film Festival) late last year, the documentary seeks to cash in on the long-standing meme (?) regarding the band, which, while being one of the most successful in music history, has a strange reputation for being dragged on.

“Hate to Love: Nickelback doesn’t shy away from the band’s topsy-turvy legacy,” reads the synopsis on the TIFF website, “but it also finds enthusiastic advocates in the likes of actor Ryan Reynolds and Smashing Pumpkins frontman Billy Corgan. Throughout, the band speaks candidly about their past highs and lows — and getting energized about the next quarter century of growling vocals, colossal drums, gnarly guitars, and irresistible hard-rock anthems.”

Leigh Brooks is the doc director with a longstanding history of creating musical docs, with the 2022 doc on Life of Agony (The Sound of Scars) is particularly well regarded.

Much like the band itself, this documentary attracted some heat from critics when it was released late last year on VOD and limited theatrically. Rolling Stone, back in September 2023, said, “This is how it reminds you that Nickelback is a Canadian rock group, and what more do you need to know than that? The movie simply repeats that basic tenet over and over, loudly and without any sense of self-consciousness.”

Audience scores have been much kinder to the documentary, however.

With its licensed documentary pickups, Netflix has been killing it in the United States lately. Just recently, we saw the release of the WNBA doc on Sue Bird, plus the excellent crime documentary Tell Them You Love Me, which dropped this month, too. In July, Netflix is set to make the SVOD premiere of another music doc, Indigo Girls: It’s Only Life After All.

That’s in addition to the big slate of documentary features and series that have dropped so far in 2024; there’s plenty more to come.
