After being one of the longest-serving anime series on Netflix to date, Sword Art Online is sadly scheduled to leave. One of the most well-known anime series to date is Sword Art Online will be leaving in June 2019.

Sword Art Online is a sci-fi adventure series based on the light novels written by Reki Kawahara. Opinions on Sword Art Online has massively divided the anime community in recent years in regards to its quality. For many young fans out there Sword Art Online is a series which would have introduced them into the world of Anime. Regardless of what anyone believes, Sword Art Online is easily one of the most well known and well-watched anime titles on Netflix to date.

In the not too distant future, gaming has evolved into Virtual Reality. Through the VR headset ‘Nervegear’ gamers are plunged into the world of their chosen video game. Sword Art Online is the hottest MMORPG to date with Beta and solo tester Kirito returning to the game for its big launch. Upon going live, the creator of Sword Art Online reveals his sinister plan. Trapping all of those with Nervegear inside the world of Aincrad, the only way to escape is to beat all 100 floors of Sword Art Online, but death in the game means death in real life too.


When is Sword Art Online scheduled to leave Netflix?

Sword Art Online is scheduled to leave Netflix on June 1st, 2019. Unless Netflix renews the license for the title, come June 2nd and you will no longer be able to stream the series on Netflix.


Why is Sword Art Online scheduled to leave Netflix?

Sword Art Online has been available to stream on Netflix since 03/16/2017, so subscribers will have had 27 months to watch all the episodes. The date for leaving is certainly more confusing as Netflix tends to license shows for 12, 36 (3 years) and 60 (5 years) months at a time.

To put it simply, Netflix’s license to stream the popular anime title is coming to an end.


Is Sword Art Online 2 scheduled to leave Netflix?

The second season of Sword Art Online is listed as a separate title on Netflix. While the series isn’t as popular as the first, it’s still watched in the droves by fans of the franchise.

Sword Art Online 2 has been available to stream since 10/09/2015, which means the series will be available until October 2020 or 2021. This all depends on whether or not the series is for 4 or 5 years.
