The Irishman – Picture: Netflix

The Irishman is due out in several weeks on Netflix globally but if you’re like us, you’re probably wanting to give the movie a watch on the big screen. For those in the United Kingdom, you’re quite limited in where you can watch. Here’s your full UK guide to where you can watch The Irishman in cinemas in November 2019.

The fact that you’re on this article means you’re probably familiar with the upcoming Martin Scorsese’ movie but just in case you need a brief reminder, here’s a recap. The upcoming movie is one of Netflix’s best shots at winning an Oscar for best picture. The movie is due to drop on Netflix the day before Thanksgiving in the United States and around the world.

It’s a gangster epic starring Robert De Niro where we travel back in time to hear about a hitman’s life story and the slaying of Jimmy Hoffa. We’ve got far more information on The Irishman coming to Netflix in our updated preview.

What cinema chains are showing The Irishman in the UK?

Only two cinema chains are showing the movie in the United Kingdom with that being Curzon and Everyman. The rest of the cinemas showing The Irishman in the United Kingdom are independent movie theaters.

London has the most choices with the BFI Southbank being an obvious choice for most movie lovers due to the historical nature of the cinema. In fact, 14 cinemas in London are showing the movie.

In addition to London, here are the other UK cities where you can watch The Irishman:

  • Canterbury
  • Cardiff
  • Colchester
  • Glasgow,
  • Edinburgh
  • Manchester
  • Nottingham
  • Liverpool
  • Portsmouth

For an interactive map of the cinemas showing the movie, you can find that on Netflix’s dedicated website.

UK cinemas showing The Irishman

Most of the cinemas showing the movie will be from November 15th which is a Friday, up to November 21st which is the following Thursday. Viewing times vary so check with the individual cinema.

Why aren’t big chain cinemas running The Irishman?

You may notice that Odeon cinemas, Vue cinemas, and Cineworld cinemas aren’t showing The Irishman. We don’t fully know the reasons for this but it’s probably to do with Netflix’s ongoing discussion around how it does its cinema releases. In the US, where the movie is also getting a limited cinema release schedule, major theater companies have rejected Netflix because of how small its window of release is.

That’s likely the same reason why your Odeons, Vues, and Cineworld’s just aren’t showing the movie.

Also, major cities are going to be missing out on The Irishman. For example, where What’s on Netflix is based in Norwich will not be screening The Irishman because all the local cinemas are chains that aren’t going to be showing the movie.

Other major UK cities that don’t have any cinemas showing include:

  • Birmingham
  • Bristol
  • Cambridge
  • Hull
  • Ipswich
  • Lincoln
  • Leicester
  • Middlesborough
  • Norwich
  • New Castle
