Detective Pikachu – Warner Brothers

For Pokémon fans old and this may be the film everyone has dreamed of watching (especially 90s kids!). Finally, after over 2 decades of dominance on handheld consoles, Pokemon has made the live action jump to the big screen. But after it’s cinematic run, will Pokémon Detective Pikachu be coming to Netflix, or will Pikachu find a home elsewhere? Let’s find out.

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is an upcoming fantasy mystery film based on the video game of the same name. Adapted from the video game, the film was written by multiple writers and directed by Rob Letterman (Goosebumps, Monsters vs. Aliens). This is the very first live-action film adapted from the ever-popular Pokémon franchise and so future projects will definitely rely on the success of this film.

Ryme City is a bustling metropolis where both humans and Pokémon live side by side. Within the city lives a former Pokémon trainer Tim Goodman, who after coming into contact with his Dad’s Pikachu go investigating into his Harry Goodman’s disappearance. With the help of “Detective” Pikachu and reporter Lucy Stevens with her trusty Psyduck, they search for Harry, but as the investigation goes down the Diglett hole, they soon uncover a plot that gravely endangers the Pokémon world.

Will Pokémon Detective Pikachu be coming to Netflix US?

Pokémon Detective Pikachu likely won’t ever be coming to Netflix in the United States. With Warner Bros. both a producer and distributor of Detective Pikachu, HBO Now will have first dibs on the film. Many of you may or may not know by now that HBO is owned by Warner Media, hence why all major Warner titles arrive on HBO Now before anywhere.

That’s not to say it won’t ever arrive on the United States Netflix but not in the near future (5 years) at least.

The next thing to consider is the inevitable release of the Warner streaming service. Many of the most popular titles from Warner will likely be available to stream from the release date. Such titles like Friends, Harry Potter, and the DC films should be available. This means that Detective Pikachu will inevitably arrive on the streaming service.

Will Pokémon Detective Pikachu arrive in other regions?

Other regions of Netflix do get Warner Brothers titles more often such as Australia, the UK and Canada. With that said, there’s no existing arrangement between Warner Brothers and Netflix abroad for regular titles. Instead, titles are dealt with on a case by case basis.

In the United Kingdom, the latest cinematic releases will arrive on Sky Cinema and Now TV first. After a limited (albeit extended) Pokémon Detective Pikachu will likely come to Netflix.

Other regions such as Australia, New Zealand and Japan will more than likely receive the film in the near future. As for Canada, if Warner intends to launch their streaming service in the country, then that will likely be the first home of Pokémon Detective Pikachu for you.
