After 3 full years of engagement reports, Howl’s Moving Castle is confirmed as the most-watched Studio Ghibli film on Netflix, but it’s super close
The legendary Japanese animators Studio Ghibli have some of the most beloved and cherished animated films ever, thanks to the likes of Princess Mononoke, Spirited Away, My Neighbor Totoro, and Howl’s Moving Castle.
Outside the US, Netflix has been the home of Studio Ghibli for six years since 2020, but only since 2023 have we had engagement reports that reveal the full extent of how much a series or film has been watched on Netflix.
From 2023 to 2025, the Netflix Engagement Reports reveal that Howl’s Moving Castle is the most-watched Studio Ghibli film on Netflix, with 40.4 million total views over three years. Howl’s Moving Castle narrowly defeats the equally beloved Spirited Away by only 400,000 views. If you were to split hairs, Howl’s Moving Castle claims the victory for the most views, while Spirited Away can claim the title for the most hours viewed.
There are many things to love about Howl’s Moving Castle: the animation, the excellent Japanese and English dubs, and the story, but beyond that, one of the most compelling things that continues to draw audiences time and time again is the incredible music, composed by Joe Hisaishi. Perhaps it’s our algorithm, but among all the Studio Ghibli films, the music from Howl’s Moving Castle is the one that features the most on social media.
When the first half of the 2026 engagement report drops soon, Spirited Away could quite unseat Howl’s Moving Castle.
