“You’re a foul one, Mr. Grinch.” Illumination Studios recently released their take on the classic Christmas story to cinemas worldwide. With the holiday season almost in full swing, many fans young and old will be flocking to cinemas to watch the latest iteration of the foul one. But will The Grinch be coming to Netflix? Let’s find out.

The original Christmas classic debuted back in 1966. It wasn’t until 2000 when the very first live-action film of the character would be released. While How the Grinch Stole Christmas didn’t resonate with critics, thanks to Jim Carrey’s witty and hilarious performance, the film has become a Christmas favorite for many.

The latest iteration of The Grinch has been animated by the creators of Despicable Me and Sing. Illumination Studios have become heavy hitters for animated-children films since the release of worldwide phenomenon Despicable Me. After animating another Dr. Seuss classic The Lorax, it was only fitting the animation studio’s first Christmas film would be their take on The Grinch.

What’s the new movie about?

Each year the Who’s in Whoville celebrate the holiday season with Jubilant and over the top joy, with Who Girls and Who Boys that can’t wait to play with new toys. While The Grinch who stands tall at the top of Mount Crumpet hates the noise from Who jovial trumpets. With a sneer and smile, he sets a plan for a while. Donning the red and donning the white, the Who’s of Whoville will get a Christmas fright. As the Grinch goes about his evil business, this is how he the Grinch stole Christmas.

Will The Grinch be coming to Netflix US?

There is no official confirmation that The Grinch will be coming to Netflix US. The contract that Illumination has in place should guarantee the release of The Grinch for a limited period of time on Netflix. Previous titles such as Minions and The Secret Life of Pets have been on Netflix due to this contract but have been removed due to the time constraints. The release of The Grinch could come as early as Spring for Netflix subscribers.

Despicable Me 3 and Sing are currently only the 2 Illumination Studio films streaming on Netflix US. The remaining films by the animation studio are only available to stream by renting or buying. Illumination doesn’t currently have their own streaming service or a dedicated platform where all their content is available to stream.

The studio has produced 9 films since 2010 and 4 of which have been a part of the Despicable Me franchise. Illumination has seen a meteoric rise in popularity in the past decade.

What about other regions?

The country with the highest amount of Illumination Studios is actually Austrailia but across the 9 films available there is no dedicated region where all the films are available to stream from one platform.

In the UK, Sky is usually the first network that receives the latest titles. Through Sky Go and Now TV it is highly likely that The Grinch will be available to stream sometime in the Spring.

In all other regions, there doesn’t seem to be a dedicated streaming platform for Illumination’s films. Many fans will be hoping their region could be the first to get exclusive streaming rights.
