The Wandering Earth is an upcoming Netflix Sci-Fi Film directed by Frant Gwo. Already becoming one of the most successful Chinese films of all time, Netflix’s acquisition of The Wandering Earth is huge for the streaming service as Netflix continues to expand its influence into the global market. On a budget of $50 Million, The Wandering Earth has already grossed an immense amount of money, becoming the 2nd highest grossing Chinese film of all time.


What is the plot of The Wandering Earth?

In the distant future, the looming threat of the Sun becoming a red giant, force the nations of Earth to form a United Earth Government. In the hope of finding a new home, the world government enacts a plan to send the Earth to the Alpha Centauri system. Giant fusion powered thrusters are created to propel the Earth outside of the Sun’s gravitational field but with the Earth’s rotation stopped, Billions die from the catastrophic waves.

As the Earth gets further away from the Sun, the drop in the Earth’s temperature causes humanity to build underground cities built next to the fusion powered thrusters. 17 years into the 2,500-year journey, the world government intends to use Jupiter’s gravity assist to thrust them further towards their goal. But when the gravity spikes from Jupiter causes chaos on Earth, many of the thrusters are disable. It’s a race against time as humanity must stop the Earth from crashing into Jupiter.

The film did have a limited release in the US and Canada which made a further $7.4 Million.
