DreamWorks animations have continued to bring more and more titles to Netflix with many of them being very well received by the community. Spirit Riding Free first came to Netflix back in May of 2017. Remarkably since then 3 more seasons have been released. Below we will be taking a quick look if this series will be returning for the 5th season, and when this might be.
If the name sounds familiar, it might be because this series is based on the 2002 Oscar-nominated film Spirit: Stallion of the Chimarron; a very popular, traditionally-animated film. The new series is computer-animated and takes place in the 19th-century rural town of Miradero in Texax. Lucky, a 12-year-old girl has just moved from the city, and in no time at all meets a wild mustang aptly named Spirit. The pair quickly bond, and after Lucky free’s him from wranglers they begin many thrilling adventures and plenty of new friends along the way.
Each season has between 6-7 episodes, which is less than some other DreamWorks/Netflix shows like Dragons: Race to the Edge. Although arguably not as successful as it’s big screen predecessor, the show has still been watched and enjoyed by many Netflix viewers around the globe. A big question on all of your minds will, of course be ‘Is the show returning for a fifth season?’ So without further ado, let’s get into it.
At the moment, neither Netflix or Dreamworks have confirmed that the series will be returning for the 5th season. But you will be pleased to hear that this doesn’t necessarily mean that you’ve seen the last of Spirit.
Dreamworks and Netflix run on an hourly system. For example, Dreamworks will buy, say 75 hours worth of space, and once that time has all been used the whole series will end. This has just recently happened with Dragons: Race to the Edge which concluded after 6 seasons. But as mentioned further up, [Dragons] had considerably more episodes in each season.
So unless Spirit Riding Free has been allocated significantly fewer hours than some other DreamWorks shows, it’s more than likely we will be seeing more adventures from Lucky and Spirit.
Regarding when this next addition to the series might arrive. DreamWorks is quite impressive when it comes to producing and the series has had a very short turn-around time so far. On average it takes them three months to release a new season, meaning that we could more than possibly see season 5 arrive by June, if not, July 2018.
