Although it’s been much quieter when it comes to licensed shows coming to Netflix in the United States so far in 2025, that trend will be bucked in June 2025 with the re-addition of all seven seasons of the hit ABC series Scandal.
On the air between 2012 and 2018 with 124 episodes under its belt, the political thriller series was headlined by Kerry Washington, who appeared alongside Henry Ian Cusick, Columbus Short, Darby Stanchfield, Katie Lowes, and Guillermo Díaz. Created by Shondaland, the series follows Olivia Pope, played by Washington, leading a team of political fixers who are able to sweep under the carpet issues before they become major scandals. Winner of multiple awards and still graded well by audiences and critics alike, the series is often ranked amongst Shonda Rhimes’ best series.
The series is now due to return to Netflix in full on June 17th, 2025, but as we’ve suggested by the headline, it’s returning after a five-year absence.
Netflix first picked up Scandal well over a decade ago, with seasons 1-3 added in September 2014 and new seasons arriving every year thereafter shortly after they wrapped up airing. The final seventh season was added in May 2018, which set a short two-year countdown to when the show would be removed in May 2020.
We don’t quite yet know how long Scandal will be on Netflix upon its return, but based on licenses over the past few years, we’re guessing anywhere between 1 and 3 years. The license to Netflix will not impact the show’s availability on Hulu.
This isn’t the only ABC show, nor the only Shonda Rhimes-produced series heading to Netflix US in June 2025. Grey’s Anatomy is unbelievably now into its 21st season and still comes to Netflix under a very old deal the streamer had with the network throughout the 2010s. That latest season recently wrapped up its 18-episode run and will be heading to the streamer on June 14th.
Of course, these licenses are in addition to any Netflix Original project the famed producer and creator has in the works. The Residence is the most recent project to land, although its future is up in the air. Bridgerton is still ongoing, with season 4 due out in 2026 and two more seasons in the pipeline.
