A television adaptation of Richard Gadd’s award-winning stage play Baby Reindeer is now streaming on Netflix as of April 2024. Based on Gadd’s own experience with a stalker, he’s playing himself in the adaptation, which comes from the same team behind Netflix’s It’s The End of the F***ing World. We’re keeping track of everything you need to know about Baby Reindeer, including the plot, cast, trailers, and the Netflix release date.

Baby Reindeer is a new comedy-drama series based on the stage play written by Scottish comedian Richard Gadd. It is directed by Weronika Tofilska and Josephine Bornebusch. The limited series (meaning it won’t be coming back for a season 2) consists of 7 episodes in total.

Clerkenwell Films is the production studio behind the series, and Matthew Mulot and Francesca Moody are the producers.

Let’s kick off our preview with the full official trailer:

What is the plot of Baby Reindeer?

Per Netflix, the plot essentially follows the original stageplay the show is based on:

“Baby Reindeer follows struggling comedian Donny Dunn’s warped relationship with his female stalker and the impact it has on him as he is ultimately forced to face a deeply buried trauma.”

Speaking about the project, Gadd said, “It is a stalker story, but it’s a stalker story with a twist. It’s a stalker story done very differently. Every now and again, I have these giddy bursts of excitement where I’m almost like a kid back at school, and then I have the bouts of “Oh my god, everyone’s gonna know my shit.”

The comedian says in real life, he received “41,071 emails, 350 hours of voicemail, 744 Tweets, 46 messages, four fake Facebook accounts, 106 pages of letters, and one cup of tea.”

Who are the cast members of Baby Reindeer?

Richard Gadd will play himself, reprising the role he played in the stage adaptation of his play of the same name. The Scottish comedian has never starred in a Netflix project before; however, he did previously write an episode of Sex Education.

Should you watch Baby Reindeer on Netflix?

There’s only a handful of reviews floating about the new series currently.

The Independent gave the series a glowing review, giving it four stars. Calling the series “something very special,” critic Nick Hilton added, “Despite its origins in the world of stand-up comedy and its listing on Netflix as ‘offbeat’, this show is no mere quirky look at London’s comedy scene. Instead, it is a descent into the blackness of abuse and the residues of trauma.”

The RadioTimes were equally positive, giving the series a 5-star review saying, “One of the show’s greatest strengths is how it’s able to balance such challenging subject matter with inspired flashes of humour.”

When is the Baby Reindeer Netflix release date?

All episodes of the series dropped on April 11th, 2024. This came after we exclusively reported the release date for the series after watching a snippet of the show at the Next on Netflix UK event.
