Holiday in the Wild is an upcoming Netflix Original Christmas rom-com written by Neal and Tippi Dobrofsky. The film will kickstart Netflix’s run of holiday-themed titles for the holiday season. Directing the film is Ernie Barbarash, director of They Wait and co-producer of American Psycho.

What is the plot of Holiday in the Wild?

When her son goes to College, Kate is treated to a ‘second honeymoon’ in South Africa by her husband. Days before leaving, he leaves the relationship to a sudden and end, leaving Kate to go to Africa by herself. When Kate decides to take a detour through Zambia, she meets handsome pilot Derek Holliston. During a tour, Kate helps Derek rescue an orphaned baby elephant. Nursing the baby elephant back to health, Kate decides to extend her stay beyond Christmas. As she begins to fall for Derek, will she return to New York or keep the adventure in Africa going forever?

When and where did production take place for Holiday in the Wild?

All of filming took place in 2018, starting in July. The film didn’t enter post-production until the 8th of May 2019.

Nearly all of filming takes place in South Africa. The locations used in South Africa were Hoedspruit and Drakensberg. Both regions are incredibly beautiful and teeming with exotic wildlife.


Has Netflix released a trailer for Holiday in the Wild?

Are the Elephants in filming real or CGI?

No CGI was used for the Elephant scenes but body doubles were used, along with some puppetry.

Production had to follow the strict guidelines and protocols by the GRI (Game Rangers International) to ensure the safety of the rescued Elephants at the sanctuary where some filming took place.

During filming the baby elephant seen on camera, Mkaliva had a body double along with Netflix investing a significant amount into puppets to ensure it was spitting image of Mkaliva. The elephant’s story in Holiday in the Wild and real-life rescue elephant Mkaliva are incredibly similar and sad.
