You may have been hearing about a Madeleine McCann Netflix documentary and the fact that it has been delayed but there’s been absolutely nothing official from Netflix. Here’s what we know about the Netflix docu-series and why we haven’t heard much.

Netflix has never been shy in covering big controversial topics and perhaps few have been larger than the Madeleine McCann story. We won’t go into too much detail here as it’s been covered far and wide but the series would cover a highly publicized disappearance of a young girl from over a decade ago.

Does the Madeleine McCann Netflix Documentary exist?

That is a very good question and one we’ve actually struggled to answer ourselves so let’s cover the facts.

The series has never been formally announced by Netflix through its usual channels which normally comes through either its Media Site or through Deadline or The Hollywood Reporter. In addition, no social media activity surrounding the series either.

Wikipedia recently removed the mention of the docu-series citing the same reasons as us above.

Where most outlets have their information is from either citing British tabloids but the most concrete evidence is the existence of an IMDb page. The IMDb page is not on the public facing IMDb search rather the pro-IMDb site for industry professionals.

Pro IMDb page for The Disappearance of Madeleine McCann

Crucially here, you can see that Netflix serves as the distributor for the docu-series and further in the IMDb page it has the release date for March 15th, 2019.

The series has not been listed on the Pulse Film website which is the site for the production company behind the docu-series.

So March 15th is close so will it actually release then? It’s possible. Netflix excluded the title in its previews for both the United States and the United Kingdom for March. In addition, there’s no official page for the docuseries on Netflix yet either.

So what’s going on?

First and foremost, there’s nothing official so this is all speculation.

According to The Guardian who has an industry insider, Netflix is planning a stealth launch for the docuseries. It said a trailer was due last week but was delayed.

They go onto speak about further information about the show such as who was interviewed.

Here’s our conclusion, the docu-series is coming we just don’t know if it’s going to be on March 15th. It may be stealth released on March 15th but given a series of delays and lack of promotion, it may be later.

The last big stealth release for Netflix was the release of Black Mirror: Bandersnatch back in December 2018 but we believe that was more to do with the slightly delayed rollout of the technology needed to power that show.

Has Kate and Gerry McCann been involved with the production?

The parents of Madeliene McCann have had no involvement with the creation of the docuseries. This is because they believe the documentary may hinder the police investigation that is still ongoing.

According to Kate and Gerry McCann, the production company involved had asked the pair to participate. The pair expressed their displeasure at the creation of the series and continued to state any of their views and preferences of the investigation are not reflected in Netflix’s docuseries.
