The end of May 2019 left many people reeling with the release of Netflix’s When They See Us. Arguably one of the hardest hitting titles Netflix has released to date When They See Us definitely left many subscribers wanting to know more on the lives of the Central Park Five and other injustices carried out against the lives of African-Americans. Are we likely to see another season of When They Us? Unfortunately, it’s very unlikely. Here’s why.
When They See Us is based on the real-life story of the ‘Central Park Five.’ In 1989 five African-Americans were blamed for the crime of raping and assaulting Trisha Meili. The young Investment Banker was jogging through Central Park when the crime was committed, the atrocity left her in a coma for 28 days. The trial of the ‘Central Park Five’ was one of the most publicized in the 1980s. The miniseries will shock audiences at the level of prejudice the five young Harlem teens had to face.
The series was created, written and directed by Ava DuVernay. This isn’t DuVernay’s first rodeo for issues faced by those in the African-American community. The most notable film she has directed to date is Selma, a film based on the town of the same name at the height of the civil right’s movement in which the town’s populace in protest against the racist laws would walk from the town of Selma to Montgomery, Alabama.
When They See Us Netflix Renewal Status
Official Netflix Renewal Status: Ended (Last Updated: 03/06/2019)
For those unaware When They See Us is a mini-series and won’t be receiving a second season. In the four episodes of the series, everything was wrapped up and the story of the Central Park Five is now known far and wide amongst the millions of Netflix subscribers.
Could the series become an Anthology?
The way in which the series highlighted the injustices carried against the young African-American men was done phenomenally well. Sadly though this is not the first time in America’s history such injustices have been carried out. There is definitely potential to make When They See Us into an anthology-like series focusing on other instances similar to that of the Central Park Five.
Searching google will not take long to find other real-life stories that could be adapted. While these stories should never be glamorized through television they do have a profound effect on educating those who otherwise would never have known of such history.
How did subscribers find When They See Us?
Naturally, with a subject such as the Central Park Five opinions are very strong so we won’t be sharing such tweets with too much provocative language. Regardless you can see how much of an impact a show such as When They See Us has had on subscribers.
Watching “when they see us” on Netflix. I’m absolutely disgusted on how corrupt our US justice system is. Especially Elizabeth Lederer and Linda Fairsteen….how women could go on living know they ruined 5 young boys lives. #WhenTheySeeUs pic.twitter.com/sAyi3uwIpY

Decided to lay down, watch some Netflix after a long day…messed around and thought “When They See Us” would be a good choice. pic.twitter.com/0uoVvoytmA

Just a friendly reminder that Donald Trump spent money to advertise the death penalty on wrongfully convicted minors back in the late 80’s.
