Magic: The Gathering Anime to be Produced by Netflix and the Russo Brothers

Hold onto your butts as we have some massive anime news heading your way. After the visual masterclass that was the marketing behind Magic: The Gathering’s War of the Spark, we have news that a series based on the world of Magic: The Gathering will be produced by Netflix along with Wizards of the Coast and the directors of Avengers: Endgame Joe and Anthony Russo.

Thanks to the announcement made by Netflix through various social media networks we can now confirm that an anime based on the popular playing card game Magic: The Gathering is in the works.


Netflix will partner with Wizards of the Coast and will look to team up with directors Joe and Anthony Russo to help create the series.

The Russo brother that are better known for their role in the success of Marvel Cinematic Universe are longtime fans of the franchise. The news that Variety helped break had the following statement from the brothers regarding their involvement:

We have been huge fans and players of Magic: The Gathering for as long as it has been around, so being able to help bring these stories to life through animation is a true passion project for us

Both the Russo’s will serve as executive producers. The other executive producers on board are Mike Larocca and Isaac Krauss.

Who else is working on the Magic: The Gathering anime?

From the little that we know so far the series will be produced by the studio Octopie.

Serving as producers of the series will be Dave Newberg, Eric Calderon, and Todd Makurath. Meanwhile, the Yoriaki Mochizuki has been tasked as a co-executive producer along with supervising director.

Behind the story of the anime will be Henry Gilroy and Jose Molina. The former is better known for his work on the animated Star Wars series while the latter worked on The Tick and Agent Carter.

The mind behind the creation of Magic: The Gathering was Richard Garfield. First released in 1993 the popular tabletop card game has grown increasingly popular in its 26-year history. Alongside all of the expansions and, thousands upon thousands of cards produced the franchise has also gone on to spawn comic books, a best selling novel, and e-sports based on the popular digital game Magic: The Gathering Arena.

Magic: the Gathering is available in over 70 countries, published in 11 languages and counting! Considering the franchise has over 38 million fans to its name we expect the anime series to be a smash hit.
