Law and Order is one of the longest running shows currently airing on NBC. The show, now in its eighteenth year, is among the best crime dramas on Netflix and that’s saying something given the amount of them that are streaming.
The which is actually called Special Victims Unit is a modern reboot of the 90’s series of the same name. The show is set in New York city and follows crimes throughout the city quite often based on real ones that have happened.
Sadly, we only have a few of the past seasons and not the full collection. Hulu currently carries all seasons.
Season 18 Netflix Release Date
The series is a relatively new release on Netflix and has had a strange release pattern. Season 16 came to Netflix on August 25th, 2016. Season 17 was added to Netflix on January 1st, 2017. What’s going on here? Well, like Shameless which only recently got Netflix, they added a bunch of seasons at once, then added another to bring the catalog up-to-date and has now returned to a yearly schedule.
That means, we’re most likely to get the next season just before the next starts which would mean an August 2017 release date. That, or it’ll release on January 1st, 2018 but that seems late as season 19 would’ve already started by that point.
There’s also some potentially bad news here for two reasons. The first with these longer shows is that quite often they only show the last four seasons. The same is in place for Family Guy for example. It could be that as soon as season 18 arrives on Netflix, we lose the oldest season.
The second potential bad news is that the show could leave Netflix altogether if NBC continues the trend of removing its show like it has over the past few months. There’s no evidence of this yet, but it’s something to consider.
What about the original Law & Order series?
Sadly not, the series as far as our records go back have never been streaming on Netflix and seem to be exclusively available on NBC’s own app.
Looking forward to a new season of Law & Order: SVU on Netflix? Let us know in the comments.
