The end is near for Netflix’s first Original program House of Cards. As the final season of the hit political drama fast approaches, here is everything we know about season 6 of House of Cards.

It’s no secret to anyone that the show was mired in controversy after the allegations of sexual assault against Kevin Spacey were revealed. While Netflix and the showrunners were unsure what to do rumors of cancelation were rife online. But as they say “the show must go on” and that is ultimately what Netflix has decided to do.

Is Kevin Spacey in Season 6 of House of Cards?

Let’s get the elephant in the room out of the way early. No. Kevin Spacey has not been cast to reprise his role for the final season. After the allegations of sexual assault came to light the fallout from this was Netflix parting ways with the actor.

In regards to his character Frank Underwood, the main character of the show has been killed off-screen as Spacey did not return to set to film a death scene. We know Frank has died as Netflix released a teaser trailer for season 6 and we see his wife Claire standing over his gravestone.

Season 5 Recap

At the end of season 5, we saw Frank’s scheming backfire on him after Claire is sworn in as President of The United States. Having revealed that Frank was behind the leaks to Hammerschmidt and was the conductor of his own downfall he stood down as President. Claire, having been sworn in as President, had agreed to publicly pardon both Frank and Doug. After giving her first address as President without pardoning the pair she ignored the calls of an angry Frank turned to the camera and said “My Turn.”

The Plot of Season 6

The season will focus on the presidency of Claire Underwood and the war with the ICO. Frank Underwood has died off-screen and Claire will have to handle the potential fallout of his death. Will Claire rise to the occasion and become one of the most memorable presidents in living memory? Or will the Underwood chickens come home to roost and destroy her legacy?

Who is in the cast of season 6?

Obviously, the biggest change in the series is the removal of Kevin Spacey. Most of the core cast from the past few seasons will be returning to reprise their roles. Constance Zimmer is set to reprise her role as journalist Janine Skorsky, she was last seen in season 4.

The latest additions to the cast are Diane Lane and Greg Kinnear who will be portraying the Shepherd siblings.

Is season 6 officially the last season of House of Cards?

Netflix has confirmed that season 6 will be the final season of House of Cards. The show was almost canceled completely but it was actress Robin Wright that argued for production to continue and for season 6 to be filmed. With the direction of the narrative of the story heading where it was, it would be likely that season 6 may have been planned as the final season. The likelihood of it exceeding past 7 seasons would have surprised many if it was the original plan.

The Trailer

Netflix dropped the trailer at the start of October.

When is the release date?

In the list of the announced releases for November, it has been revealed that House of Cards will air on November 2nd.
