NBC’s ongoing crime drama Law & Order entered into its 20th season this past September but with Law & Order seemingly no longer being updated on Netflix, seasons 19 & 20 seem unlikely to come to Netflix anytime soon.
The long running show used to be a staple of the Netflix library but in recent years, it’s failed to update and its past seasons have left Netflix. This doesn’t look to be changing.
It’s not the only show with its future in doubt on Netflix with no word from either camps. Criminal Minds future on Netflix is still in doubt with season 13 still yet to appear on the service.
Now let’s take you through what you need to know about Law & Order on Netflix and its streaming future.
Why isn’t season 19 Law & Order: SVU on Netflix yet?
As we first said back in 2017, we’d have expected season 19 to arrive on Netflix at some point in the summer of 2018. Summer has come and gone and obviously, season 19 still isn’t available on Netflix.
So what’s going on? Well, the answer although not officially announced is that Netflix’s contract with NBC for the show has run out and NBC has chosen not to renew.
That explains why Law & Order: SVU in its entirety including seasons 19 & 20 are now streaming on Hulu. That’s likely going to be the shows permanent home going forward and that makes sense given that NBC has a stake in the streaming platform.
Seasons 19 & 20 of Law & Order: SVU won’t come to Netflix
As you’ve probably worked out by now this far into the article, seasons 19 & 20 of Law & Order will not be coming to Netflix at all.
That’s unless Netflix can negotiate a new contract but given Netflix let it go in the first place, they’ll unlikely be able to justify picking up the show again.
What will happen to the remaining seasons?
As of the time of writing, four seasons of the show remain on Netflix. The oldest three seasons have just gotten removal dates for January 2019 and the newest season will likely follow suit later in 2019 or in January 2020.
Season 18 is now scheduled to leave Netflix in March 2019.
Many will be disappointed with Netflix’s decision to no longer continue Law & Order on the streaming service especially given there’s little coming in to replace it. The Good Cop is probably one of the closest to L&O but got cancelled soon after the first season aired earlier this season.
